IELTS SPEAKING CLASS PRACTICE QUESTIONS: IELTS SPEAKING PRACTICE QUESTIONS PARTI Introduction As most test taker has done before the preparation is to know what you have to do and how to answer them. In this section are the practise questions that have been the backbone of the IELTS Spoken section. Many students have told me that they got a new question but after reviewing them these question are the foundation all they do is change the keywords that still mean the same thing. These questions were made after a study of 10 IELTS Specimen Tests, the IELTS Handbook 2005, Preparation for the IELTS Speaking Test, 101 Helpful Hints for IELTS Academic Module, New Oriental and Global Spoken referencing books, Thomson Test Booklets, 3gbbs.com, 51ielts.com and cnielts.com. The later ones are a basic goldmine for test takers if they read the websites (that is for the Chinese takers) other websites are ielts-blog.com, ieltsthailand, ieltsindia, or any other country just insert it into your favourite search engine for this information is universal in nature for the spoken section. Some of the other sites have been taken off but with this modern era other sites come on if you so some researching so pick your favourite search engine and start travelling around the world for this knowledge does help not only for the speaking but also for the writing portion. Part 1 of the Speaking Test Overview 1. The actual Speaking Test doesn't begin until the examiner turns on the tape or MP3 recorder. 2. Part 1 will take 4 to 5 minutes. 3. Part 1 begins with a greeting such as, "Good morning." and the examiner " introduces him/herself. 4. Then the examiner asks you the Standard Introductory Questions. (See below) 5. Next, the examiner introduces a topic and asks you a few questions on that topic. Then s/he proceeds to the next topic and so on until they introduce the last topic for Part 1. Each topic might have an average of 4 questions and that is depending on the length of your answer. So, in total, Part 1 of the test has a possible 16 questions if you are your answers are really short. These 16 questions are to be answered in 4-5 minutes. Part 1 of the Speaking Test: The Standard Introduction Questions Hello my name is Thomas Jefferson; I’m your examiner today. Can you tell me your full name, please? Please tell me your name. What shall I call you? What do your friends call you? What can I call you? Which name can /may I use? Can you tell me where you're from? Where are you from? Which city are you from? Is this your hometown, if not what is it? Can I see your identification, please? May I see your identification, please? Do you have your identification with you and may I see it, please? We don't know exactly what topics will be chosen as Topics. In general, Topics are about your everyday life, everything around and about you, concerning you. It may have questions that are pertaining to the past, present or future so be aware of the verb tenses in the question and answer them accordingly to those verb tenses. This is to show the examiner that you understand the question that you need to answer and that you completely understand it. Now if you don’t understand the question ask for clarification so that you do not answer it incorrectly. By not answering that question and answering it wrong you have proven to that person that you do not understand the question or what you were to talk about therefore will receive a 3 starting from the beginning and I will tell you to climb out of a hole like that is like you trying to get out of your own grave when you are still alive. So please, please ask if you did not understand it clearly your future is on the line. You must know that they cannot help you in part 1 but some of the examiners are good other well they are following the rules. But before you start to talk, you'll have one minute to think about what you're going to say. You can make notes if you wish. Do you understand?" 2. Then the examiner will give you a card, which will look just like the questions below. 3. When the examiner gives you the card, he'll say, "I'd like you to describe ..." or, "I'd like you to talk about..." followed by the words on the card. There will be more questions on the card, and you should answer these in your speech. But the examiner will not read these questions to or for you. Special Note: Candidates please note here that you must answer the questions on the card and stick close to the topic. Relative information relating to the topic is great to support the topic subject but never go off on a tangent away from the topic itself. While you are speaking, you'll still have the card with you to look at. 7. The examiner should not interrupt you or speak to you while you are speaking. 8. When the 2 minutes are up or when you stop talking (at close to 2 minutes) or you have indicated that is it, the examiner will probably say, "Thank you." 9. Part 2 will finish with the examiner asking you 1 or 2 short questions, connected to what you stated. The purpose of these questions is to “terminate or close” Part 2.
