is determined by whether the vowel has a “live” or “dead” ending.

If the two consonants in the cluster belong to different classes, the class of the first
consonant determines the tone.
The tone of the second syllable is determined by the second consonant in the cluster,
unless it is one of the following consonants: ง น ม ร ย ล ว
In these cases, the class of the first consonant determines the tone.
In two-syllable words consisting of three consonant symbols and no vowel symbols, the
first vowel is “a” and the second is “o”.
If there is a vowel symbol in the second syllable, but none in the first, a short “a” vowel
must be supplied in the first syllable.
There are a number of words which appear to have two syllables but which are
pronounced as three syllables, with a short “a” vowel in the middle. In such words the
final consonant of the first syllable also functions as the initial consonant in the second
syllable.

อ นํา ɔɔ nam
There are four words in the Thai language which use อ นํา (ɔɔ nam) as the first letter in
to change the word’s tone characteristics. In these words, the low class consonant ย
takes on the tone characteristics of the middle consonant อ. The four words are:
อยา yàa do not/don’t
อยู yùu to be situated at/located
อยาก yàak to want
อยาง yàang kind, sort, type (noun); like, as (adj)
ห นํา hɔ̌ɔ nam
ห นํา (hɔ̌ɔ-nam) appears at the beginning of some words and yet is not pronounced.
The low consonant takes on all the tone characteristics of the high consonant ห. When
a tone mark appears, it is placed over the low consonant, not over the silent ห. The
eight low-class consonants that ห นํา can appear before are:
ง ญ น ม ย ร ล ว
