nullnull K英语091 周静 张超 张路 于笑AuthorAuthorThe book is written by Charles Webb. This classic novel about a naive college graduate adrift(漂泊的) in the shifting social and sexual mores of the 1960s captures(拍摄) with hilarity(欢闹) and insight the alienation(疏离感) of youth and the disillusionment of an era(时代的觉悟).nullThis is the story of Benjamin Braddock, a 20 year old college graduate who comes home from his four years in school completely unsure of what he wants to do with his life.null While staying at the house of his upper middle class parents, he suddenly finds himself being seduced(引诱) by Mrs. Robinson, the sexy wife of his father's law partner. At first, Ben resists her attractions, for he has known her since he was a baby, and it is simply too strange to consider. Soon after, however, Benjamin finds himself so bored with his life that he decides to have an affair with her after all, meeting her secretly several nights a week at a local hotel. All is going well until Mr. Robinson, completely unaware of what is happening, insists that Ben take out his daughter Elaine, who was coming down to LA from Berkeley, where she was attending school. For reasons that are not entirely clear, Mrs. Robinson is determined to not let Benjamin go out with Elaine, but he does anyway. The result is a disaster for all involved, as the affair is soon exposed. The situation then becomes even more complicated when Ben finds himself falling in love with Elaine. nullBen & Mrs. RobinsonBackgroundBackgroundHistorical background In the 1960s, the development of America’s economy grew quickly. The young people began to doubt the rationality of the old tradition. The civil rights movement, women's liberation movement, against the Vietnam war all reflected the disruptive and destructive of the new ideas. is the masterpiece of the satire literary. It reflected the American young people’s helpless, confusing and dissatisfaction to the social reality. This system is the main literary of the 1960s.Social backgroundSocial backgroundMany people consider this movie to be a true classic. At the time it came out in 1967, it caused a sensation(轰动性事件), and to a certain extent(到。。。的程度), many might still say that it captured(现,记录) the rebellious(反叛的) spirit of the times in which it was made. Then we can take a look about PRODUCTIONThen we can take a look about PRODUCTIONCasting According to TCM host Robert Osborne, "Mike Nichols wanted Doris Day for Mrs. Robinson, Robert Redford for Benjamin Braddock and Gene Hack man for Mr. Robinson." There is considerable age difference for both cast and characters; Benjamin Braddock says, "next week I will be twenty-one" and at the time of filming Dustin Hoffman was thirty. Mrs. Robinson states, "Benjamin, I am twice your age." In fact Anne Bancroft was thirty-five, only five years older than Hoffman. Mrs. Robinson's daughter Elaine is nineteen. Bancroft was only eight years older than Katharine Ross, who was twenty-seven. Ava Gardner sought the role of Mrs. Robinson. Although Mike Nichols met with Ava, he had not really considered Gardner for the part. Joan Crawford inquired as to playing Mrs. Robinson. Patricia Neal was offered the part of Mrs. Robinson but she had recently recovered from several serious strokes and did not feel ready to take on such a major part so soon.Filming locationFilming locationMany of the exterior(外面的) shots of Benjamin on the campus were actually filmed on the brick campus of USC in Los Angeles, as the UC Berkeley campus features buildings with gray granite exteriors. Other scenes were filmed on the Berkeley campus, on Durant Avenue in Berkeley, and on Telegraph Avenue. The main themesThe main themesnullThe themes of loneliness, isolation and entrapment(诱捕) are central to the narrative of the 1967 film . Throughout the film, many devices are used in order to communicate this to the audience. This list of devices includes the use of water and glass. For example, which is seen in many scenes and emphasizes the isolation and entrapment of the not particularly remarkable but worthy kid who drowns amongst many objects and things throughout this film. nullThe theme of an innocent and confused youth who is exploited, mis-directed, seduced literally and figuratively and betrayed by a corrupt, decadent, and discredited older generation (that finds its stability in “plastics”) was well understood by film audiences and captured the spirit of the times. One of the film‘s posters proclaimed the difficult coming-of-age for the recent, aimless college graduate. The two different generations are also reflected in other dualities: the two rival women (young innocent doe-eyed daughter Elaine and the older seductress Mrs. Robinson), the two California settings (Los Angeles and Berkeley) and S. and N. California cultures (materialistic vs. intellectual), and the division in Benjamin's character (morally drifting and indecisive vs. committed).nullThere was already a growing dissatisfaction with the status quo and middle-class values, and the breakthrough film mirrored that anarchic mood perfectly for America's youth of the 60s during the escalation of the Vietnam War. However, in the final analysis, director Nichols actually subversively portrayed how aimless and unlived the disaffected young generation was (in the character of Benjamin) - and would become as they approached middle-age and worked in sterile corporate settings. [In the same year, it joined Bonnie and Clyde (1967) as one of the most popular films for the college-aged generation.] It was complemented by the music of the popular singing duo Simon and Garfunkel from their Grammy-winning The Sounds of Silence album (with songs composed earlier and previously-released except for "Mrs. Robinson"), with meaningful, haunting lyrics amidst koo-koo-kachoo sounds to enhance the film's moods and themesHow many conflicts do we know in this story? How many conflicts do we know in this story? The movie reflected the social conditions of America at that time. The movie’s hero was a young man who would have a great future. But after graduating, he lost way to life. His future had been arranged by his parents. He was caught in a trap and all kinds of orders by adult socialization. He suddenly realized and tried to rise up against. He suffered pain all the time. He felt out of place with the social environment. So conflict escalated(逐步上升). nullThe middle class considered that the young people didn’t experienced the suffering of war. They had to cherish the hard-earned nice future. But the young generation’s value and philosophy couldn’t understand their parents. Two different values got in trouble with each other. nullBen is at loss as how to plan for his future. His confusion, emptiness and desire for adulthood bring him and Mrs. Robinson together. Ben’s nervousness is in sharp contrast to Mrs. Robinson’s matureness. nullBoth Mrs. Robinson and her daughter had something to do with Ben. It resulted in main conflict of the movie. When the relation between was found by Elaine. She couldn’t understand and chose to leave.Leading rolesLeading rolesAnne Bancroft (安妮·班克罗夫特 ),was born on 17th september,1931.a famous actress of Hollywood. There is a Brazilian version adapted by Miguel Falabella. Several actresses have starred as Mrs. Robinson, including Kathleen Turner, Lorraine Bracco, Jerry Hall, Amanda Donohoe, Morgan Fairchild, Anne Archer, Vera Fischer and Linda Gray. The Broadway production in 2002 starred Kathleen Turner, Jason Biggs, and Alicia Silverstone. The stage production adds several scenes that are not in the novel or the film. It also uses songs by Simon & Garfunkel not used in the film, such as "Baby Driver" as well as music from other popular musicians from the era such as The Byrds and The Beach Boys.Possibility of sequel Possibility of sequel Charles Webb has written a sequel to his original novel titled Home School, but initially refused to publish it in its entirety because of a contract he signed in the 1960s. When he sold film rights to The Graduate, he surrendered the rights to any sequels. If he were to publish Home School, Canal+, the French media company that owns the rights to The Graduate, would be able to adapt it for the screen without his permission. Extracts of Home School were printed in The Times on May 2, 2006. Webb also told the newspaper that there was a possibility he would find a publisher for the full text, provided he could retrieve the film rights using French copyright law. On 30 May 2006, The Times reported that Webb had signed a publishing deal for Home School with Random House which he hoped would enable him to instruct French lawyers to attempt to retrieve his rights. The novel was published in Britain in 2007 but was poorly received.ExpressionsExpressions① Mr. Braddock: About what? 布兰多克先生:为什么焦虑?
