Researchers say the real temperature could be one degree colder. ⑱The coldest temperature found before this was minus 89.2 degrees Celsius, also in Antarctica. Scientist Dr.Ted Scambos said it was hard to imagine such cold weather. Antarctica is 50 degrees colder than Siberia. ⑲The moon was once minus 238 degrees Celsius. The temperatures of the satellites measured won't be in the Guinness Book of Records. ⑳Scientists must use a thermometer and take the temperature a few centimeters above the ice. The temperatures of the satellites were a few centimetres above the ice. Dr.Scambos said he was sure that the satellites' temperatures are accurate. He also said it was too cold for a thermometer to work. He said it was so cold that people couldn't breathe the air. When scientists go outside, they must wear a special mask that goes inside their coat. They breathe the warm air close to their skin. A The Coral Sea is home to an amazing variety of turtles, sharks, whales, dolphins, large fish, birds, corals, plants, and many other species. Many of these species are endangered elsewhere in the world, but still survive in the healthy environment of the Coral Sea. The Coral Sea is a large series of coral reefs located off the northeast coast of Australia. This area is three times larger than Australia's famous Great Barrier Reef, which the Coral Sea borders. The Coral Sea is one of the few coral reef environments that have remained largely undamaged by over-fishing,oil and gas exploration and pollution. However, statistics show that coral reefs around the world are disappearing five times faster than rainforests. It is very likely that in the near future the Coral Sea will face the same threats to its existence. The Australian government is currently looking at options for protecting the Coral Sea but has made no decisions. Environmentalists are pushing for laws to declare the Coral Sea area a marine protected area. This world mean a large “no-take zone” for fishermen, a no-exploration zone for gas and oil companies and a no-dump zone for pollution. This would make the Coral Sea a marine park larger than any in the world. We can write letters to Australian leaders, Australian environmental protection agencies, and Australian friends, to let them know that people worldwide support this protection of the Coral Sea. To lose this last great marine wildness world would be a loss for the whole world. Each of these deals replaces the morals of the queue(waiting your turn) with the morals of the market(paying a price for faster service). Markets and queues-paying and waiting—are two different ways of allocating things, and each is appropriate to different activities. The morals of the queue, “First come, first served,” have an egalitarian(平等主义的) appeal. They tell us to ignore privilege, power, and deep pockets. The principle seems right on playgrounds and at bus stops. But the morals of the queue do not govern all occasions. If I put my house up for sale, I have no duty to accept the first offer that comes along, simply because it's the first. Selling my house and waiting for a bus are different activities, properly governed by different standards. Sometimes standards change, and it is unclear which principle should apply. Think of the recorded message you hear, played over and over, as you wait on hold when calling your bank:“Your call will be answered in the order in which it was received.” This is essential for the morals of the queue. It's as if the company is trying to ease our impatience with fairness. But don't take the recorded message too seriously. Today, some people's calls are answered faster than others. Call center technology enables companies to “score” incoming calls and to give faster service to those that come from rich places. You might call this telephonic queue jumping. Of course, markets and queues are not the only ways of allocating things. Some goods we distribute by merit, others by need, still others by chance. However, the tendency of markets to replace queues, and other nonmarket ways of allocating goods is so common in modem life that we scarcely notice it anymore. It is striking that most of the paid queue-jumping schemes we've considered—at airports and amusement parks, in call centers, doctors' offices, and national parks—are recent developments, scarcely imaginable three decades ago. The disappearance of the queues in these places may seem an unusual concern, but these are not the only places that markets have entered. 25.According to the author, which of the following seems governed by the principle “First come, first served”? A.Taking buses. B.Buying houses. C.Flying with an airline. D.Visiting amusement parks. 26.The example of the recorded message in Paragraphs 4 and 5 illustrates ________. A.the necessity of patience in queuing B.the advantage of modern technology C.the uncertainty of allocation principle D.the fairness of telephonic services 【解析】 C 推理判断题。 27.The passage is meant to ________. A.justify paying for faster services B.discuss the morals of allocating things C.analyze the reason for standing in line D.criticize the behavior of queue jumping 【解析】 B 写作意图题。 C Two new studies suggest that modem running shoes could increase the risk of injuries to runners. One study involved sixty-eight healthy young women and men who ran at least twenty-four kilometers a week. The runners were observed on a treadmill machine(跑步机). Sometimes they wore running shoes. Other times they ran barefoot(赤脚). Researchers from the JKM Technologies Company in Virginia, the University of Virginia and the University of Colorado did the study. They found that running shoes create more stress that could damage knees, hips and ankle joints than running barefoot. They observed that the effect was even greater than the effect reported earlier for walking in high heels. The study appeared in the official scientific journal of The American Academy of Physical Medicine. The other study appeared in the journal Nature. It compared runners in the United States and Kenya. The researchers were from Harvard University in Massachusetts, Moi University in Kenya and the University of Glasgow in Scotland. They divided the runners into three groups. One group had always run shoeless. Another group had always run with shoes. And the third group had changed to shoeless running. Runners who wear shoes usually come down their heel first. That puts great force on the back of the foot. But the study found that barefoot runners generally land on the front or middle of their foot. That way they ease into their landing and avoid striking their heel. Harvard's Daniel Lieberman led the study. He says the way most running shoes are designed may explain why those who wear them land on their heel. The heel of the shoe is bigger and heavier than other parts of the shoe, so it would seem more likely to come down first. Also, the heel generally has thick material under it to soften landings. But the researchers do not suggest that runners immediately start running barefoot. They say it takes some training. And there can be risks, like running when your feet are too cold to feel if you get injured. The study was partly supported by Vibram, which makes a kind of footwear that it says is like running barefoot. The findings have gotten a lot of attention. But the researchers say there are many problems in the way the press has reported in their paper. So they have tried to explain their findings on a Harvard Website. 28.What's the main idea of the passage? A.Walking in high heels could cause less serious effects than running barefoot. B.Two new discoveries encourage people to run in high heels. C.Running in shoes is partly good to runners. D.Two new studies prove running without shoes is less risky to runners in most cases. 29.Which part of our body could be injured if we run in running shoes? A.Toes. B.Hips. C.Feet. D.Legs. 30.What can we learn from the passage? A.The way that we run by landing on the front or middle of our foot could avoid damaging our heel. B.We should start running barefoot in no time. C.Running in modern running shoes could cause more serious effects than running in high heels. D.We won't be injured if we run barefoot. 31.What is the writer's attitude toward the use of the modem running shoes? A.Persuasive. B.Negative. C.Objective. D.Supportive. D Wanted, Someone for a Kiss We're looking for producers to join us on the sound of London Kiss 100 FM. Many schools are equipped with video cameras nowadays. __36__ For the students who are studying there, it is just like they're being spied on. Plus for all the students they won't be learning anything from the teacher because they will just be looking at the camera for the whole class. Someone thinks it is good. Schools need to protect children. __37__ I think cameras in school are the best way to go.They can provide proof of who did what and how it happened. They will help the world if everyone got security cameras. I would be happy. __38__ Then a video record is worth a million! Being able to show parents how their child behaves in a classroom would be a “wake up” call for both redemptive and proactive action. A video record would be decisive proof as to what actually happened in a classroom and would save time, money and heartache. It would also, to put it frankly, begin a meaningful dialogue. But others think that cameras should not be allowed in classrooms. In classrooms cameras would distract the kids. __39__ I think that no one should be able to watch the videos unless there's permission from the teachers, students, and parents. Cameras in every classroom would also be a waste of thousands of dollars! Why not just spend money on new things, or anything else that isn't as useless as a camera?__40__ Yes. A camera would give some help, but it's not likely it could catch a thief while he's harming the school. We might see who he is, but we wouldn't be able to get him while he is stealing. A.A picture is worth a thousand words. B.They would also invade privacy. C.It will cost too much for its little benefits. D.Cameras take pictures of everything clearly. E.Cameras catch everything from different angles. F.Cameras are just an extra pair of eyes. G.Let's save money for something more useful. They can provide proof of who did what and how it happened. Then a video record is worth a million可知选项A符合语境。 In classrooms cameras would distract the kids. Why not just spend money on new things,or anything else that isn't as useless as a camera? Abbaye, a master artist, was ready to retire in 1392. Furthermore, already I can see your __47__. So I insist that while I work your portrait stay __48__ even from you!” “No problem,” Bartoli agreed, though he thought it was__49__, “Anything you wish, but it must look realistic.” Immediately the master artist __50__ a high curtain in front of the wall, through which Bartoli couldn't see at all. A week passed. “How is it coming?” asked the __51__ Bartoli. “It's coming quite well. You see, a masterpiece __52__ quite a while at least.” Abbaye answered from behind the __53__. Another three, four weeks passed and __54__ half a year went by. Bartoli lost his __55__.“Today I must see it!” he shouted. Stepping from behind the curtain __56__ surprised by such anger, Abbaye said calmly, “That's fine. You needed only to request it.” And he __57__ aside the 20-foot curtain. It's true that 61.there exist a lot of differences, but this cannot be an excuse 62.for having a passive attitude toward studying in China. When I came back from the US last year and continued my senior middle school education in China, I sensed many great differences. I thought that school in China was too hard for 63.us(we) students, and that we didn't get to do enough fun exercise except running around playgrounds together. My mom had a long talk with me. After that, I realized that though high school life in China is harder, it can give us 64.more(much). The pressure helps us learn the true meaning of competition 65.before we step into society. You might feel dizzy and nervous, but the top is always there 68.waiting(wait) for you as long as you are strong enough—69.to_take(take) one more step. We complain 70.mainly(main) because we can't see the whole picture. I insisted on doing most of the baking myself. I thought the biscuits were really well. My only mistake was that I dropped some on the floor after I was packing them up. At a party, my coach, with a biscuit in his mouth, asked surprisingly who made them and joked, “I might have to retire again next year just get some more of these biscuits.” My favorite picture at the party is of my coach and me enjoy the biscuits with happy laughter! 71. 77.第七句中的after改为when/while 考查状语从句。 的时候”,要用when或while。 78. Dear_Mr.Smith,_ I'm_Zhang_Zhiqiang,_chairman_of_the_student_union_of_Donghua_Middle_School.
