I’m your host Liang Jing.M: I’m Yuanxuan. I wish to grasp this opportunity to thank you all for your continued love and support for us.F: And we hope you could give us your attention as always in the coming year.M: In today’s programme, you will get on a train and start the year’s first trip with us – to amusement parks. Our first stop will be Word Club, where you can see whatever fun you’re gonna have in an amusement park. At the second stop, World’s Kaleidoscope, a variety of theme parks around the world will appear before you. After that, we’ll go on to today’s terminus – Movie House. To keep it mysterious, I’ll reveal the name of the movie later on in our journey. Now get you ticket, and let’s go! Part One: Word ClubM: Hey, where have you been on the New Year’s Eve? Got a party to live it up?F: Oh, it was a pity that I’d been fully occupied with my reviews those days. But for the finals, I’d rather have been hanging out with my friends and waiting for the arrival of my last New Year on this campus.M: I feel sorry for that. Anyway, it doesn’t matter much. Let’s just prepare a plan for this time next year, okay?F: Well, I’d expect myself to be studying in Britain then. Quite probably I’d take a train across the Channel and get off when it arrives in Paris. I’d watch the countdown in a plaza, oh oh, maybe I’d be more likely to go to the Disneyland to watch the parade and the firework show.M: It would be a memorable trip, that’s for sure. I remember once I experienced a parade. That was fabulous! “Parade”是一场盛大华丽的巡游。在迪士尼里，换上庆典新装的米奇和米妮，南瓜车上的 灰姑娘，都会不时经过身边，微笑地与你招手。F: Sometimes the excitement they produce is hilarious enough to make you dance and sing along with them. But somehow, I’m even more fascinated by the “firework show”, “烟 火表演”. 看着那些绚烂的烟花腾空降落，会有莫名的幸福涌上心头。M: Yeah, fireworks seem to have a sort of witchcraft, which always get the spectators into ecstasies. Oh„ it suddenly occurs to me that there’s another thing that you must be fond of.F: Um, I wonder what it could be. It’s a„M: It sings cheerfully when it’s on show.F: A fountain! Yeah, it’s a “musical fountain”, “音乐喷泉”. Passers-by tend to throw a coin into the fountain and make a wish when the fountain is not playing music.M: 当音乐静止，喷泉成了往来人群的许愿池。他们“throw a coin into the fountain”, “向 许愿池投下硬币”, “make a wish”, “许下心愿”. Do you believe that if you do this, your dreams will come true?F: I’d rather say I’m willing to try it. You’ve got nothing to lose.M: Except for several pence.F: Aha, well worth it! I think to follow the crowd and queue up for a ride would be a different kind of joy. I guess there would be a long, long “cable railroad”, “merry-go-around” and “Ferris wheel”. 想象里的游乐园，总有长长的“索道”，“旋转木马”和“摩天轮”。M: Merry-go-around looks gorgeous, with a variety of seats like the most traditional horses, as well as “zebras”, “斑马”, “unicorns”, “独角兽”, and “coaches”, “四轮马车”. They gallop round and round, up and down, as if never stop.F: Perhaps that’s why some say that the merry-go-around represents eternity.M: Yeah. Similarly, the Ferris wheel is considered to stand for happiness. But I haven’t been in a Ferris wheel cabin yet. Instead, I’m a frequent rider of roller coaster. Dare you ride a “roller coaster”?F: 不就是“云霄飞车”嘛～It’s Ok with me. Can’t you think of something more breath-taking?M: Come on, you’re challenging me! I seek all kinds of thrills, like “Pirate Ship”, “海盗船”, “Haunted House”, “鬼屋”, “Freefall ride”, “自由落体车乘”„.F: Wow! That sounds exciting.M: You seem to be a brave one, huh? Maybe sometime we’re gonna have a contest on that.F: No problem. You can’t win! But before talking about that, you should tell me where I could find some specialties in a park. You know what? Some friends have already begun to ask me for presents.M: Let me see„ Almost every park would have some fancy little shops selling souvenirs. They may have quite different names, from ordinary “store” and “shop” to “treasure-house” and “chandler”. 因而不论是看到“store”和“shop”这样平凡的名字，还是“treasure-house”或“chandler” 这样生疏的字眼，都做好淘宝贝的准备吧～F: Yeah, I’ll buy some small handicrafts and accessories like “key ring”, “钥匙 扣”, “piggy bank”, “存钱罐”, “photo frame”, “相框”, “plush toy”, “毛绒玩具”, “throw pillow”, “抱枕”, “pin and badge”, “别针和徽章”„.M: I have one last suggestion for you. When you grow too tired to play, a food kiosk or cafe would be a perfect place for you to refresh a little. “Food kiosk”也就是贩售各种各样小零食的亭子。F: Yeah, then a cup of hot cocoa would suffice me. I’m so lucky today to have you consummate my plan. Ok everybody, it’s time we put an end to today’s Word Club. Next is World’s Kaleidoscope. Please stay with us! Part Two: World’s Kaleidoscope1. Ocean Park Hong KongM: Next station: Admiralty. Doors will open on the left. Alright, you’re still with Yuanxuan and Liang Jing in Crispy English. We’re now transferring to a shuttle bus heading for Ocean Park Hong Kong.F: Yuanxuan, how long will it take to get there? I almost can’t wait to see the spot.M: Be patient. It will just take some 20 minutes. Hey, why not we make use of the interval and give our audiences a brief introduction of the park?F: It’s sure to be a good idea. As far as I know, Ocean Park is almost a household name. It’s a marine-themed amusement park situated in the southern district of Hong Kong.M: Yes, the park is separated by a large mountain into two areas, the Summit/Headland and the Waterfront/Lowland. Except for the shuttle bus we take, a 1.5 km-long cable car system can also reach the areas.F: Gorgeous!M: Yeah, imagine a virtual trip through the Ocean Park from the Lowland section to the Headland section: first, the Middle Kingdom. At the Middle Kingdom, tourists will see many ancient structures such as temples, pavilions and streets. Walking through the Middle Kingdom, you come upon the Hong Kong Jockey Giant Panda Habitat.F: I know it. That’s home to four lovely pandas. All are very popular and appear contented in their lush green environs.M: Correction! And beyond the Panda Habitat we enter the “Dinosaur Now and Then” exhibits, the Dolphin Breeding Center, and other wildlife exhibits which emphasise the importance of protecting endangered species.F: Then what’s in the Headland section?M: There is the expanse of the marvelous maritime landscape comprised of Atoll Reef, Shark Aquarium, Ocean Theatre, and Ocean Park Tower.F: Wait„ Ocean Theatre? A theatre built in the ocean or„?M: Aha, actually it is an open-air theatre in which dolphins and sea lions stage a wonderful performance under the guidance of trainers in a huge pond. It’s the most famous and popular spot in the whole park.F: Got it. Ocean Park is also famous for its many thrilling rides. Can you tell us more about the rides?M: Sure. The theme park currently has 35 rides. The latest ride is the Abyss Turbo Drop, which moves vertically on a 185-foot tower. As the platform slowly ascends, riders have an overall view of the ocean park. The platform stops briefly at the top before it drops abruptly, surprising even the prepared.F: And I’ve heard that the park also has the longest roller coaster in Hong Kong with a maximum speed of 77 kilometres per hour.M: Not only that! Ocean Park Hong Kong also operates observatories, well developed laboratories, an education department and a Whales and Dolphins Fund.F: That’s great. I bet after visiting the park, tourists can gain more knowledge about marine animals. It must have contributed a lot to raising awareness of protecting the environment and endangered species.M: Absolutely. When it comes to environmental protection, one thinks of Copenhagen because the United Nations Climate Change Conference just drew the curtain there.F: Yeah, we’re worried about the global climate change. But don’t let Copenhagen take the„. Anyway, let’s look at a more interesting Copenhagen at the Tivoli Gardens.2. Tivoli Gardens in CopenhagenM: Gardens? Aren’t we talking about amusement parks?F: Aha, although Tivoli Gardens do enjoy beautiful flower gardens, it is actually more an amusement park than a grass, tree and grove garden. It includes a variety of attractions: buildings in the exotic style of an imaginary Orient: a theatre, band stands, restaurants and cafes, and mechanical amusement rides.M: I’m extremely interested in the floral part. You know, Copenhagen is at such high latitude.F: Yes. Tivoli’s flower beds are kept colorful throughout the year, but the best time to visit the park is late spring, when 115,000 flowers bloom throughout the park. You can walk through various landscapes, almost like what’s in a botanical garden.M: Wow, sounds wonderful. Just now, you said, there are buildings in exotic style? I’m wondering how it looks.F: I mean the Pantomime Theatre built in Chinese style. It’s noted for its mechanical front curtain that takes five men to operate and unfolds like a peacock’s tail. Besides, there are also Chinese pagodas built near the Tivoli Lake.M: Excellent combination of Eastern and Western culture!F: On certain evenings, specially designed fireworks could be seen reflected in Tivoli’s lake. It could be a very spectacular night view.M: Definitely. And I remember you’ve mentioned the theatre. Is there anything special?F: Yeah! You remind me of one of the most fascinating attractions in the garden. In fact, Tivoli Gardens also serve as a venue for various performing arts and as an active part of the cultural scene in Copenhagen.M: I love that! You know, art, culture and stuff like that„.F: Me, too. The garden boasts the Tivoli Concert Hall, a classical concert hall featuring concerts with some of the largest names in international classical music.M: Classical music? That’s an acquired taste. Anything for the youth, like live music?F: Yeah. During the warmer summer months, Tivoli also features a live music series.M: Sounds interesting. But, as you’ve mentioned the young people, I feel that Disneyland is something they can never miss out.3. Tokyo DisneylandF: You can say so. Since you are apparently in favor of Disneyland, let me give you a quiz first. We all know that the first and most famous Disneyland Park is in California. But do you know where the first Disneyland outside the United States was?M: Let me see, Tokyo?F: That’s it! Tokyo Disneyland is a 115-acre theme park at Tokyo Disney Resort, the first Disney Park built outside the United States.M: Yes, but what’s interesting is that Tokyo Disneyland and its companion park, Tokyo Disney Sea are the only Disney parks not owned by the Walt Disney Company.F: Although it’s owned by the Oriental Land Company, it was constructed in the same style as Disneyland in California and Magic Kingdom in Florida.M: That means we can expect most of the classic themed areas in it.F: Exactly. There are seven themed areas in Tokyo Disneyland, complementing each other yet unique in style: World Bazaar, the four classic Disney lands: Adventureland, Westernland, Fantasyland and Tomorrowland, and two mini lands, Critter Country and Mickey’s Toontown.M: World Bazaar? What’s that?F: Instead of the Main Street, USA, an area commonly shared by all other Disneyland-style parks around the world, Tokyo Disneyland calls its entry corridor “World Bazaar”. The most distinctive aspect of World Bazaar is that it resembles the Crystal Palace, built in part to account for the frequent rain and snow in the region. It’s entirely under a Victorian style glass and wrought iron roof.M: It must be wonderful. I’m also interested in the area Westernland. Is it different from the traditional Frontierland in Disneyland, California?F: Yeah, the name is different. But it carries a Wild West style similar to Frontierland.M: I see. It’s every bit as “Disney” as we might expect.F: Of course, but remember: located in Japan, it has its own characteristics.M: Really? Explain it to us.F: The famous customer service quality that Disney so perfectly delivers is almost automatically delivered everywhere in Japan. It’s part of Japanese culture. Where else in the world do shop assistants not only treat you like the President, but actually bow to you too!M: Also, it isn’t the Japanese way to walk around and eat at the same time, so there are fewer snack places than in the other parks. Nor is it the Japanese way to smoke while you’re walking around the park, so there are designated smoking places throughout the park where you are encouraged to smoke if you need to.F: Cool, I think the designated smoking place is quite a good idea and should be applied to other parks too.&, lt;, SPAN style="LINE-HEIGHT: 150%; FONT-FAMILY: 'Times New Roman','serif'; FONT-SIZE: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt" lang=EN-US>M: I hope so. Really looking forward to a trip to Disneyland.F: Hey, but I’ve already seen the colourful fire balloon floating in the sky nearby. We’re arriving at Ocean Park. Let’s get off the bus!M: Wait for me! I really have no idea.F: It’s Neverland, the place where Peter Pan lives.M: Oh, Peter Pan, the boy who never grows up.F: Precisely, in today’s Movie House we’re going to share with you the movie Peter Pan. Now let’ s get started.[Clip 1]M: Just think happy thoughts and you can leap into air.
