小说《德克拉》试论吸血鬼文化_英语论文 ---------------------------------------------------------------范文最新推荐------------------------------------------------------ 小说《德克拉》试论吸血鬼文化_英语 论文 Abstract Dracula is an 1897 Gothic horror novel by Irish author Bram Stoker. Famous for introducing the character of the vampire Count Dracula, the novel tells the story of Dracula's attempt to relocate from Transylvania to England, and the battle between Dracula and a small group of men and women led by Professor Abraham Van Helsing. Dracula has been assigned to many literary genres including vampire literature, horror fiction, the gothic novel and invasion literature. The novel touches on themes such as the role of women in Victorian culture, sexual conventions, immigration, colonialism, and post-colonialism. Although Stoker did not invent the vampire, he defined its modern form, and the novel has 1 / 8 spawned numerous theatrical, film and television interpretations. This paper aims to make a further research of the novel Dracula. With the wide spreading of the vampire film and TV series, more and more people become crazy about the vampires. What’s the history of this legend? In which background did the author write this novel? What’s the ideas or purpose of the novel? The thesis of the paper is to find out the answers and study the culture of the Vampire. The paper mainly has five parts. First part is about introducing the history and influence of the vampire culture. And the elements of the culture reflected in the novel will be briefly discussed. The second part is the further discussion about the elements of vampire culture in Dracula like the characters and the thesis. In the third part, the potential and profound substance would be envolved to understand the implication of the novel better. The fourth part is close to our mordern life since the vampire movie and tv series are hot in recent years. This part will ---------------------------------------------------------------范文最新推荐------------------------------------------------------ show people how Dracula impacts on the modern works. The final part concludes that the pop culture of vampire is mainly originated from Dracula. Though vampire cultures originated on the European continent, their development has mainly taken place in the 5 / 8 English cultures. After the transformations raised by the three periods—medieval legends and superstitions, literature of the Industrial Revolution, and persified modern cultures, the images of vampires in people’s imaginary world have undergone a very interesting and thought-provoking transition—from an evil and supernatural being to an incarnation of average person. At the same time, different backgrounds of historical periods, people’s ideas and concepts, and social ethics have all exerted certain important influences on the development of vampire cultures. The new vampire is fantastically seductive and is almost omnipotent in his knowledge and power over humans. However, he is a tragic hero who's eternal damnation and demise can be hastened by sunlight, and wooden stakes through the heart. He is also vulnerable to ---------------------------------------------------------------范文最新推荐------------------------------------------------------ the beauty and innocence of attractive mortal women, who he must pursue, corrupt and discard. Although impressively handsome and lonely, he can no longer experience the love and true companionship of a mortal woman and is surrounded by shallow creatures he has already corrupted and who once corrupted, can no longer be desired or loved. The new literary vampire is incredibly popular, as the attractive, evil protagonist of the new Victorian Gothic novel. He becomes an enduring symbol of the anti hero. Some writers have suggested that the Dracula novel represents the underlying sexual repression of Victorian society and the desire for male domination and the subjugation of women. Clearly the dark lover representing dangerous and forbidden sex would have been a popular character in a society where open sexual expression was forbidden to 7 / 8 women. Vampires embodied both forbidden sexuality and escape from death but their wretched form of existence was punishment for their transgression. 1.2 The Influences of Dracula Abraham Bram Stoker (8 November 1847 – 20 April 1912) was an Irish novelist and short story writer, best known today for his 1897 Gothic novel Dracula. During his lifetime, he was better known as personal assistant of actor Henry Irving and business manager of the Lyceum Theatre in London, which Irving owned.(Punter, 1980:109) 小说《德克拉》试论吸血鬼文化(3):
