上海学生英语报A1: Sun Yang, China’s New Swimming Star!;Sun Yang is only 20 years old, but he is the latest swimming star in China! At the 2011 FINA World Championships (国际泳联世锦赛) in Shanghai, he won the gold medal in the men‟s 1500-meter freestyle* and broke the world record. Sun was born in Zhejiang, China. His parents used to be volleyball players. When he was in kindergarten, Sun was a very tall boy. A swimming coach found him and started to teach him to swim. Soon Sun showed his swimming talent. Now, he is one of the best swimmers in the world.   The 2012 Olympic Games are coming. Sun is busy preparing for it. He is ready to shine again in the swimming pool in London!21 book also draws information from dozens of interviews with Jobs‟ family members, friends, competitors and colleagues. The biography is written by Walter Isaacson, the former managing editor (主编) of Time magazine. According to Isaacson, Jobs authorized the biography because he wanted his kids to know him.  “I wasn‟t always there for them, and I wanted them to know why and to understand what I did,” Jobs told Isaacson in their final interview at Jobs‟ home in Palo Alto, California (加利福尼亚州帕洛阿尔托市).  According to Amazon.com‟s book description, Jobs asked for no control over what was written nor even the right to read the book before it was published. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly in their interviews. And Jobs himself spoke frankly about the people he worked with and competed against.  The book is now one of the most looked forward to new books as people around the world grieve for Jobs and pay tribute to him.   B3 Sudoku is fun!(1936-45) ;It‟s a numbers game that has become the biggest puzzle craze to hit the world since Rubik‟s Cube (魔方), appearing all over the newspapers and spreading across the Internet. The game is Sudoku. Sudoku is a number placement puzzle based on logic rather than mathematics. The concept of Sudoku is simple. The puzzle consists of a 9x9 square grid (网格) that is divided into nine 3x3 squares, resulting in nine rows (排) and nine columns (列), for a total of 81 small squares. The unsolved Sudoku puzzle supplies only a few numbers in random (随机的) squares. These numbers are called givens. To solve the puzzle, the remaining squares must be filled in with the numbers 1 through 9, each appearing only once in each row, column and 3x3 square. There is only one correct answer to each puzzle, and no guessing is necessary. Sudoku rules are easy to learn. The more puzzles you do, the better you become. People, young and old, can easily fall in love with the game. They play it during journeys, in waiting rooms, and on rainy afternoons. The popularity of this simple game raises some puzzling questions: such as, why, in a high-speed, high-tech age, would millions of people become addicted to a game invented more than 200 years ago by a blind Swiss mathematician? The answer is complicated (复杂的). Humans have been puzzling since the dawn of time, and the ability to think logically has long been recognized by science as a key element of natural selection (自然选择，物竞天择). All societies puzzle but, as a rule, the most successful ones puzzle more. 22 Since it is our instinct (本能) to puzzle, it is not hard to explain why we love this fun game.   Sudoku became popular in Japan in 1986, when a Japanese puzzle magazine publisher called Nikoli published it in his magazine. Nikoli then patented (申请……的专利) the word “Sudoku” and began publishing the puzzles in varying difficulty levels. They became wildly popular in Japan. In 2004, Sudoku‟s international popularity began when a puzzle was published in a British newspaper. From there, the popularity of Sudoku spread to the United States and elsewhere. 20111024 A1：Andy Murray: I want to be No. 1!(1938b-1) ;In the last few weeks, Scottish tennis player Andy Murray has taken Asia by storm! He won the Thailand Open (泰国公开赛) at the end of September; the following week he finished top at the Japan Open; last Sunday, the 24-year-old picked up the Shanghai ATP Masters 1000 (上海ATP1000大师赛) trophy. Murray felt very happy about his win in Shanghai because he gained 1,000 points and raised his ATP ranking. That means he will move from his current No. 4 position to No. 3 in the ATP rankings. It leapfrogs him over Roger Federer to rank among the world‟s top three tennis players, behind Rafael Nadal and world    No. 1, Novak Djokovic. Murray says, “Becoming No. 3 in the world is a wonderful moment, but it is all part of the process I‟ve been building towards. It is nice, but you know what the goal really is.” Yes, we know, Andy; it‟s to leapfrog over the other two guys and be No. 1 in the world! B1：Sebastian Vettel, double F1 champion! (1938-1) ;Red Bull‟s (红牛车队) driver Sebastian Vettel now joins an elite club, becoming only the ninth driver in history to win successive titles. He finished third at the Japanese Grand Prix (日本大奖赛) two weeks ago, gaining 15 points. But he just needed one more point to become the 2011 world champion. Over the team radio, Red Bull team leader Christian Horner said: “Sebastian, you‟re the 2011 world champion. Well done.” 23 In reply, an emotional Vettel said: “Thank you so much. We took nothing for granted and we did it!” In the world of Formula One, Vettel has always been a record breaker. In 2006, he became the youngest to drive at a Grand Prix; in 2007, he was the youngest driver to score points in F1; one year later, he became the youngest Grand Prix winner; last year, he was the youngest world champion. This year, the 24-year-old made history again by becoming the sport‟s youngest double world champion. Formerly known as the “crash kid,” Vettel has silenced his critics by driving excellently and maturely with full dominance in the 2011 F1 season. Till the Japanese Grand Prix, he won a total of nine races and finished every race except one (fourth in the German Grand Prix) on the podium.   Our congratulations to Sebastian Vettel. He is in fact a true F1 legend in the making. Guess we will see his famous “No. 1” finger gesture for many years to come. B2 NBA cancels season’s first two weeks (1938-2) ;The first two weeks of the 2011-12 NBA regular season have been canceled because players and team owners failed to reach a new labor agreement by October 10, a deadline set by Commissioner David Stern (NBA总裁大卫·斯特恩).    “We have a gulf that separates us,” said Stern. “We remain very, very far apart.” He warned that the entire season could be lost if no significant progress was made. A lockout began in July after the two sides were unable to get the deal done. Although a series of meetings have been held over the past few months in an effort to avoid the costly loss of games, there is still a huge gap between owners and players. One of the major issues in the lockout has been the league‟s revenue sharing. Owners are asking players to accept a 47 percent share of the revenues, while players want 53 percent.  The two sides have been trying to reach a deal on the same issues for over two years. Owners say they have to greatly reduce players‟ salaries to stop the huge financial losses the owners have suffered in recent seasons.  The new season was scheduled to begin on November 1 and there were to be 100 games in the first two weeks. It is the second time in the history of the NBA that a labor dispute has led to the cancellation of games.  24 20111027 A1：Taylor lautner:a new action hero!(1940b-1) 下载地址:./P917.mp3 We know that Taylor Lautner is the handsome werewolf Jacob Black in the Twilight (《暮光之城》) movies. But did you know that he was a karate star when he was a kid? He began studying karate at the age of six. When he was eight, he won three gold medals for the United States. He even became a world champion at 12! Later, Taylor decided that he wanted to act. He appeared in a few films before his big role in Twilight. His karate skill helped him play the werewolf well. He even put on 30 pounds of muscle to look more like a werewolf in the second Twilight movie. After more than three years of playing the popular werewolf, the young actor wants to try more different roles. Recently he starred in a movie called Abduction (《绑架》). He plays an action hero for the first time. Now, Taylor is one of the hottest movie stars in Hollywood. He‟s got two more Twilight films to make, plus quite a few other movies! B1：Spoiled rotten (1940-1) 下载地址:./P591.mp3 Li Tianyi is fifteen years old and drives a BMW. At least he did until recently. His wings got clipped after a road rage incident—he and his friend beat a husband and wife who were driving in another car. They had dared to block his way. Unexpectedly, Li was sent away to juvenile detention for a year. I say “unexpectedly” because Li is the son of Li Shuangjiang, the famous singer, and most people thought he could not be punished. In the last year, we have seen several cases of the children of the rich, the famous and the powerful getting into trouble. These children sometimes think they are “untouchable.” They lead privileged lives and too often their bad behavior is not punished by others because of their parents‟ high status. The parents are clearly to blame for the bad attitude of their children. Their kids have been spoiled rotten. Li Tianyi is too young to drive and he has done nothing to earn a BMW.    To have wealth and power is a privilege, but it is also a responsibility. Warren Buffet (巴菲特), the American billionaire, knows this. He is wealthy but also modest and charitable. And he raised his children to be modest and charitable, too. They were not spoiled rotten but encouraged to be independent: to make their own careers and their own money. Li Shuangjiang apologized for his son‟s behavior and, perhaps, Li Tianyi has learned a lesson: you can stand on your father‟s shoulders but you can‟t let him carry you through the rest of your life.
