There will be new runways, terminals, and a new flight control tower whose size and central placement make it an emblem of the new airport. Wingardh was awarded the commission after winning an international invited competition that included Aldo Rossi, Heikkinen and Komonen, and Nielsen, Nielsen & Nielsen. The composition of the tower is based on a classical tripartite division into base, shaft, and capital. The design builds on the theme of juxtaposing polar opposites. The tower is black and white striped, like a lighthouse or cairn on the seacoast. On top are two rooms for directing traffic, the upper for monitoring take-offs and the surrounding airspace, the lower for monitoring aircraft at gates and taxiing toward runways. The scheme clearly differentiates between technical equipment and the human workforce, separating the two and cloaking them in black and white respectively. The theme recurs in the facilities housed within the base of the tower. For flight control, the tower is only a means to provide a clear view. The control room is the building’s raison d’etre and therefore its most dominant element, while the shaft is kept as slim as possible.
