Not that she has to do much to make Rayborn from Indian and Polish descent stunning. One need only look at those steely-green eyes crystal-clear complexion anddelicate bone structure to see why Ray was voted one of the 1 0 Most Beautiful Indian Women of the Millennium by a Timesof India poll. Its also hard not to notice the sadness in her eyes as she recounts the tragic news that a good friend of hers inIndia has passed away something she just found out hours before. But once the topic is changed to her upcoming nuptials to banking executive and philanthropist Jason Dehni those sameeyes brighten and sparkle. quotIts all hitting home nowquot she says of her October wedding. quotSlowly bit by bit everything iscoming together.quot In what Ray calls a weekend wedding extravaganza 120 of her closest friends and family from Canada Indiaand Europe will meet in Californias picturesque Napa Valley for Rays party of a lifetime. quotIm really looking forward to itquotsays Ray. quotIts probably going to be one of the only times in our lives and that everyone we care about will be grouped togetherin one setting.quot From the destination its the spot where the couple got engaged down to the dress a creation by Wendell Rodricks who isa good friend of Rays each detail of the day has meaning and purpose much like how Ray strives to live her life. But beforeRay walks down the aisle she has another note-worthy trek to tackle first -a five-kilometre walk for Multiple Myeloma thatshell do just days before her wedding. quotJason is walking with mequot she says. quotHaving his support makes all the difference.” THE DAY HER LIFE CHANGED On June 23 2009 when Ray was just 37 years old she was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma MM an incurablecancer that starts in plasma cells which are made in bone marrow. quotI remember that day so vividlyquot she says. quotI had such mixed feelings. I was in shock and denial but at the same time Iwas also relieved. I was so sick and tired of being tired. It was a relief to finally figure out what was wrong. quot The diagnosisalso brought with it an unexpected change of perception says Ray who credits it with motivating her to put into action all thethings she wanted to do with her life. quotIt made my outlook more balanced and harmonious” says Ray. “I don‟t know if mylife would be all that it is now without the diagnosis.” During the hard emotional months following the news as a coping mechanism Ray started a blog called “The YellowDiaries” to share her cancer experiences. As a result her forthrightness and humour throughout the difficult illness earned her attention and respect from all cornersof the world as well as„The Voice Achievers Award 2009‟ and „The Hope Award 2010.‟ “It was the only way I could start processing what I was going through” says Ray. “Plus because of the steroids I wason I had lots of extra energy and couldn‟t sleep. I was feeling anxious and confused. I started writing to understand.” One year later following a post stem cell transplant in February 2010 Ray became and remains cancer-free. Yet despiteher turnaround she still feels it‟s important to raise awareness of the disease and give back which is why she dedicates a lot ofher time and resources to help raise funds for the first research chair for Multiple Myeloma at Princess Margaret Hospital inToronto. “I am very unapologetic about using my position to raise awareness for MM” says Ray. “We are so close to turning itinto a chronic disease instead of a fatal one. Post-cancer my life has taken on a different sense of purpose. So many peoplesupported me throughout my treatment - all I want to do is pay it forward to give back.” JOURNEY TO THE TOP Following her recovery finding projects that would facilitate her need to balance work and life was a must. But with bigsuccesses in both India and Canada deciding which project to take next was tricky for Ray. That was until Top Chef Canadacame calling. Discovered in India when she was just a teen vacationing with her parents Ray went on to become not only oneof the most successful cover models and celebrities in India but also an acclaimed award winning actress who starred inCanada‟s Oscar-nominated film Water. Now the host of Top Chef Canada Ray says she couldn‟t be happier with her currentcareer status. “I have always been a food nerd. And now I have the opportunity to work alongside some of the best culinary minds inNorth America” she says. “It‟ a dream gig. My job is to host eat and make people really jealous of my job. It‟ great to be s sat that table. It‟s like Canada‟s best dinner party ” she says. As for what happens on TCC next season Ray is pretty tight-lipped but says viewers will be pleased with how thecontestants are all stepping up their game. “Next season is going to be awesome” she says. “We have such a good time onthe show and we really contestants. People don‟t realize but we are rooting for them all and get disappointed when someonehas to go. “They‟re like our kids we want them all to do well.” WHAT‟S NEXT FOR RAY In addition to being a foodie Ray is also a devoted yoga practitioner something else she credits to her bout with cancer.“Post treatment yoga forced me to tune into my body” she says. “It gave me something to look forward to.” It‟ a passion sthat has blossomed into a business for Ray who currently celebrated her first year as a business owner of a Moksha Yoga studioin Brampton with partners Paris Moghtader and Annette Mellor. “It‟s been such an amazing experience that we‟re alreadymaking plans for the next studio” she says.
