弗兰西斯 弗兰西斯?培根(Francis Bacon ,1561—1626)是英国哲学家、作家和科学家。他竭力倡导“读史使人明智,读诗使人聪慧,数学使人精密,哲理使人深刻,伦理学使人有修养,逻辑修辞使人善辩(Histories make men wise, poets witty, the mathematics subtle, natural philosophy deep, moral grave, logic and rhetoric able to contend)。他推崇科学、发展科学的进步思想和崇尚知识的进步口号,一直推动着社会的进步。这位一生追求真理的思想家,被马克思称为“英国唯物主义和整个现代实验科学的真正始祖”。他在逻辑学、美学、教育学方面也提出许多思想。著有《新工具》、《论说随笔文集》等。后者收入58篇随笔,从各个角度论述广泛的人生问题,精妙、有哲理,拥有很多读者。 著有《学术的进步》(1605)和《新工具》(1620)等。培根尖锐地批判了中世纪经院哲学,认为经院哲学和神学严重地阻碍了科学的进步,主张要全面改造人类的知识,使整个学术文化从经院哲学中解放出来,实现伟大的复兴。他认为,科学必须追求自然界事物的原因和规律。要达到这个目的,就必须以感官经验为依据。他提出了唯物主义经验论的原则,认为知识和观念起源于感性世界,感觉经验是一切知识的源泉。要获得自然的科学知识,就必须把认识建筑在感觉经验的基础上。他还提出了经验归纳法,主张以实验和观察材料为基础,经过分析、比较、选择、排除,最后得出正确的结论。 《论说文集》最能体现培根的写作风格:文笔优美、语言凝练、寓意深刻。这本书中的文章从各种角度论述了他对人与社会、人与自己、人与自然的关系的许多独到而精辟的见解,使许许多多人从这本书中获得熏陶指导。如: “一个自身无德的人见别人有德必怀嫉妒”。 “没有友谊,则世上不过是一片荒野”。 “最能保人心神健康的预防药,就是朋友的忠言规谏”。“思想中的疑心就好 象鸟中的蝙蝠一样,永远是在黄昏中飞的。疑心使君王倾向专制,丈夫倾向嫉妒,智者倾向寡断和忧郁。” “狡猾就是一种阴险邪恶的聪明。一个狡猾人与一个聪明人之间,却有一种很大的差异,这差异不但是在诚实上,而且是在才能上的。” “顺境的美德是节制;逆境的美德是坚忍。这后一种是较为伟大的一种德性。” 培根一生在学问上成就很大,然而作为政客他饱尝了仕途之艰辛。做女王掌玺大臣的父亲去世后,他一直未得到女王的重用。直到詹姆斯一世当政,他才逐渐得到升迁,先后担任过法院院长、检察长、掌玺大臣等,还被封男爵、子爵等贵族尊号。然而,后来他又被免除了一切官职。成为平民之后,培根将全部的精力投入到学问研究中,他最终成为中世纪英国著名的唯物主义哲学创始者。1626年4月培根离开了人世。 知识就是力量。 名言解说 这是培根一句脍炙人口的名言。在培根看来,人是自然的主人,可以驾驭自然。但“要命令自然,就必须服从自然”,即认识自然规律,掌握科学知识。正是从这个角度出发,培根提出了“知识就是力量”的著名论断,至今影响我们一代又一代人的生活。 生活的理想,就是为了理想地生活。 (附注,在英文中,“力量”也译为“权力”,所以,这句话……) 弗兰西斯(培根是近代哲学史上首先提出经验论原则的哲学家。他重视感觉经验和归纳逻辑在认识过程中的作用,开创了以经验为手段,研究感性自然的经验哲学的新时代,对近代科学的建立起了积极的推动作用,对人类哲学史、科学史都做出了重大的历史贡献。为此,罗素尊称培根为“给科学研究程序进行逻辑组织化的先驱”。 弗兰西斯 培根(1561——1626)是一位英国文艺复兴的代表人物,他是杰出的哲学家,科学家及散文家。他通过持之以恒地用科学方法思考及依靠观察而非权威学说获取知识的态度成为现代科学的奠基人。他的《培根散文集》是英国文学中这一流派的典范,并被誉为散文发展的重要里程碑。他所运用的一些新鲜还进入了英国文学传统。 "Of Studies"主要: 《论读书》<>是培根散文集58篇散文集中最著名的一篇。文章分析了学习的主要的目的,不同人采取不用学习方法及学习是如何对人的性情品格产生潜移默化的影响。《Of studies》的语言有气度并颇有说服力,结构简练而紧凑,向读者揭示了培根对学习的自然客观态度。 Of Studies is the most popular of Bacon's 58 essays.It analyzes what studies cheifly serve for,the different ways adopted by different people to pursue studies,and how studies exert influence over human character.Forceful and persuasive,compact and precise,Of Studies reveals to us Bacon's mature attitude towards learning. “Of Studies”英文原版: Of Studies is writen by Francis Bacon Studies serve for delight, for ornament, and for ability. Their chief use for delight, is in privateness and retiring; for ornament, is in discourse; and for ability, is in the judgment and disposition of business. For expert and execute, and perhaps judge of particulars, one by one; but the general counsels, and the plots and marshalling of affairs, come best form those that are learned. To spend too much time in studies is sloth; to use them too much for ornament, is affectation; to make judgement wholly by their rules, is the humour of a scholar. They perfect nature, and are perfected by experience: for natural abilities are like natural plants, that need proyning (pruning) by study; and studies themselves do give forth directions too much at large, except they be bounded in/ by experience. Crafty men contemn studies, simple men admire them, and wise men use them; for they teach not their own use; but that is a wisdom without them, and above them, won by observation. Read not to contradict and confute; nor to believe and take for granted; nor to find talk and discourse; but to weigh and consider. Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested; that is, some books are to be read only in parts; others to be read, but not curiously; and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention. Some books also may be read by deputy, and extracts made of them by others; but that would be only in the less important arguments, and the meaner sort of books; else distilled books are, like common distilled waters, flashy things. Reading maketh a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man. And therefore, if a man write little, he had need have a great memory; if he confer little, he had need have a present wit; and if he read little, he had need have much cunning, to seem to know that he doth not.
