The Lady or the Tiger (Continued) …… She raised her hand, and made a slight, quick movement toward the right. No one but her lover saw her. “Right! Well, I don’t know what’s behind the right door, but at least it’s a hint. Mm, I should trust her… Yes, now I must trust her. I love her. Yes!” thought the young man. He had a quick look at the princess, all dewy-eyed with love, and then turned, and with a firm and rapid step he walked across the empty space to the door on the right. Taking a deep breath, he put his hand on the doorknob and pulled the handle. The handle pulled so easily that he saw what it was indeed behind the door before he could finally be prepared to accept the truth. “Wow…” “Ahh…”“No…”. All the cries and shouts arose from the crowd. The young man was petrified. What he saw was a tiger, fierce, enormous, strong, exactly the one that had been searched as the most savage and relentless beast of the kingdom. “What? That cannot be true!” He totally got confused. He turned suddenly to the princess; his eyes were fixed on her, wondering what was going on and trying to figure out that why his dear lover told him to choose the tiger. But when he caught the eyesight of the princess, he became even more bewildered, because he could only see the deep love from the telltale look in her eyes. “Since she loves me so much, why still told me to choose the tiger? Is it a mistake or something? Or am I really expected to die, my love?” But there was no time any more for him to think. The tiger was moving, pacing steadily and slowly towards the young man. The crowds began to shout, waiting to see the performance, the final fighting between the young handsome boy and the tiger. As the tiger approaching, the young man began to dodge. Still, he was forced into a dead angle. The tiger was coming near. The young man was in despair. He saw the bloody mouth of the tiger opened before he closed his eyes. He felt that all the shouts and cries around seems more clearly to be heard, and himself more sensitive to everything in the arena. He could almost feel the wind blowing by as the fierce tiger opened its mouth. The hurt came on his leg, and gradually aggravated. He thought his leg was going to break. Right at this moment, the hurt became slight, and finally disappeared. Keeping eyes closed, he could still hear the tiger move, slowly far away from himself. Suddenly, the crowd calmed down. He knew something extraordinary must have happened. He slowly opened his eyes. Guess what did he see? He saw the most savage and relentless beast starring at him, pitifully and sorrowfully, and its fierce teeth disappeared. At this moment, he understood what indeed happened. It was her, who he loved and who also loved him. He turned to his girl, the princess, to see the most beautiful smile that he had ever seen. He wept for her kind and considerate behavior, and regretted that he almost misunderstood his dearest love. He signaled “I love you” to the princess, showing his victory to the audience in the arena. Girls all cheered for the victory of their handsome, brave hero, but more people kept whispering. They knew that this was apparently against the rules of the game, the judgment, to be more exact. So they all cast their eye sights to the ruler who was sitting next to the princess, waiting for the final statement. It was to everyone’s surprise that finally the king announce the young man and the princess husband and wife. The audience all ignored the fact that whenever there was a hitch, and some of his orbs got out of their orbits, the king was blander and more genial still, for nothing pleased him so much as to make the crooked straight, and crush down uneven places. The outcome of this judgment was obviously pleased him to a great degree. Yes, nobody paid attention to the king’s fondness, except the king’s beloved daughter, who finally won the happiness of herself, as well as the favor of her father.
