Reading Comprehension Directions: In this part there are 4 passages. Each passage is followed by 5 questions or unfinished statements. For each of them, there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage One Passage One By adopting a few simple techniques, parents who read to their children can greatly increase their children's language development. It is surprising but true. How parents talk to their children makes a big difference in the children's language development. If a parent encourages the child to actively respond to what the parent is reading, the child's language skills will increase. A study was done with 30 three-year-old children and their parents. Half of the children participated in the experimental study; the other half acted as the control group. In the experimental group, the parents were given a two-hour training session in which they were taught to ask open-ended questions rather than yes-or-no questions. For example, the parent should ask, "What is the doggie doing?" rather than "Is the doggie running away?" The parents in the experimental group were also instructed in how to help children find answers, how to suggest alternative possibilities and how to praise correct answers. At the beginning of the study, the children did not differ in measures of language development, but at the end of one month, the children in the experimental group showed 5.5 months ahead of the control group on a test of verbal expression and vocabulary. Nine months later, the children in the experimental group still showed an advance of 6 months over the children in the control group. 41、 Which of the following can be inferred from the passage? A. Children who talk a lot are more intelligent. B. Parents who listen to their children can teach them more. C. Active children should read more and be given more attention. D. Verbal ability can easily be developed with proper methods. 42、 What does "It" in line 2 can most probably be replaced by? A. Parents' increasing children's language development. B. Reading techniques being simple. C. Parents' reading to children. D. Children's intelligence development. 43、 According to the author, which of the following questions is the best type to ask children about? A. Do you see the elephant? B. Is the elephant in the cage? C. What animals do you like? D. Shall we go to the zoo? 44、 The difference between the control group and the experimental group was ______. A. the training that parents received B. the age of the children C. the books that were read D. the number of the children 45、 The best conclusion we can draw from the passage is that ______. A. parents should be trained to read to their children B. the more children read, the more intelligent they will become C. children's language skills increase when they are required to respond actively D. children who read actively seem six months old Passage Two Passing by a supermarket, I was attracted by a long queue of people with big plastic bags full of kinds of goods they bought outside the gate. I came up with curiosity to find out the puzzle. Handing in this purchase ticket to the girl in charge of the activity, the boy in the front of the queue received a box of chocolate with delicate package. It turned out to be a promotion activity, which would provide a box of chocolate to those who bought more than ten yuan worth of goods and paid one more yuan. It's really good news especially for those who are keen on bargains. Once there was a promotion activity, they were usually easy to go into ecstasies (狂喜;入迷) and bought the goods on impulse, never having time to consider carefully whether they needed the goods desperately or not. I was not an exception. When I was determined to make a purchase, however, finding that there was only nine yuan with myself, I was forced to give up. Nowadays, more and more merchants use their brains to launch bewildering (迷惑人的) promotion activities to attract people's attention, which motivate their consumption. It's merchants who take advantage of people's psychology of taking advantage of petty benefits. From the point of the whole society, consumption stimulates production, which in turn brings up employment opportunities and strengthens the purchase capacity of the whole society. Once people have more money, they can afford and consume more goods. Consequently, the more goods are consumed, the greater incentive (鼓励) for the renewal cycle of products, which results in the progress of industrial technology and the elimination of economic depression. As for one who has little money at his disposal, he'd better consider carefully before making a purchase decision. Otherwise, he has to curtail (削减) his expenditure during the rest of the month. 46、 Why was the boy given a box of chocolate? A. Because he had a purchase ticket. B. Because he was keen on bargains. C. Because the goods he bought cost more than 10 yuan. D. Because he had helped the girl to carry the goods she bought. 47、 People cannot help buying goods they don't actually need when ______. A. there is a promotion activity B. they have enough money C. they have time to go around D. they are with children 48、 I didn't buy the goods during the promotion activity because ______. A. I was not interested in them B. I didn't need the goods C. I didn't have enough money D. I had no time 49、 Which of the following statements is True? A. Nowadays people are not easy to believe the promotion activity. B. Consumption promotion is a way of eliminating economic depression. C. Consumption can stimulate production but cannot bring up employment opportunities. D. That people want to buy better goods with little money is a bad news to the merchants. 50、 For a person who has little money, which of the following is a good proposal? A. Buy more goods during the promotion activities. B. Don't buy any goods during the promotion activities. C. Consider carefully before buying goods. D. Buy things as few as you can. Passage Three It is really a surprise that after hundreds of years, educationists have still failed to design anything more efficient and reliable than examinations. It is claimed that examinations test what you know, but it is common knowledge that they more often do the exact opposite. They may be a good means of testing memory, or the skills of working rapidly under extreme pressure, but they can tell you nothing about a person's true ability. As anxiety-makers, examinations are second to none. That is because so much depends on them. They are the mark of success or failure in our society. Your whole future may be decided in one fateful day. No one can show his best in worry, or after a sleepless night, yet this is precisely what the examination system expects him to do. A good education should, among other things, train you to think for yourself. The examination system, however, does anything but that. What has to be learnt is laid down by a syllabus (教学大纲), so the student is encouraged to memorize. Examinations do not motivate a student to read widely, and they do not enable him to seek more and more knowledge. Furthermore, teachers themselves are often judged by the results of their students' examinations. Consequently, they have to train their students to master exam techniques which they dislike. The most successful candidates are not always the best educated but the best trained. The results on which so much depends are often nothing more than a subjective assessment by some anonymous (匿名的) examiners. They certainly make mistakes, because they have to mark mountains of scripts (答卷) in a limited amount of time. They work under the same sort of pressure as the candidates. 51、 The main idea of this passage is that examinations are ______. A. anxiety-makers B. reliable and efficient C. harmful to education D. good measures of memory 52、 It is clear that the author ______ examinations. A. argues for B. argues against C. is indifferent to D. is interested in 53、 The fate of students is decided by ______ according to the passage. A. examination B. teaching C. education D. learning 54、 According to the author, the most importance of a good education is to ______. A. encourage students to read widely B. teach students how to tackle exams C. train students to think on their own D. encourage students to seek more knowledge 55、 Which statement is NOT mentioned in the passage? A. Examinations can make students anxious. B. The examiners might make mistakes in marking. C. Teachers' work is judged based on the results of examinations. D. Tools better than examinations to test students' ability have been found. Passage Four Vegetable gardening is the relaxing art and science of turning a love for growing plants into a meaningful activity. Having vegetables in the backyard makes home gardening appealing for many people. In addition, vegetable gardening provides exercise and fun for both urban and suburban families. Vegetable gardeners agree that many home-grown vegetables are superior to those purchased from markets. From spring through late fall, a well-planned and well-kept garden can provide a supply of fresh vegetables, thus increasing the nutrition of the family diet. Freezers make it possible to keep some of the vegetables to be enjoyed at a later date. Other vegetables can be stored for a few months in a cool area. Although the money spent for a garden may be little, one cannot escape the fact that gardening requires hard work and time. Many of the gardening tasks must be performed at times that are most inconvenient. Not doing jobs that should be done on a regular basis may result in failure and a negative feeling toward gardening. One should not plant a garden that is too large for him to care for. A small, well-kept garden is more enjoyable and profitable than a large neglected one. Vegetables do well in full sunlight and need at least five or six hours of sun during the middle of the day. Too much shading results in poor plants and few vegetables. If possible, the garden should be near the house, so the gardener can work in it whenever they are free. Soils for vegetables should be easily broken up and porous (多孔的) for quick water drainage and good aeration(透气). Usually the home owner has little choice in the soil type he can choose. Fortunately, many vegetables can be grown on poor soils if the soils are properly prepared. 56、 Many people find home gardening ______. A. expensive and boring B. interesting and enjoyable C. time-consuming and inconvenient D. neither interesting nor enjoyable 57、 A well-planned and well-kept garden can provide a supply of fresh vegetables ______. A. all year round B. whenever you need nutritious food C. for a great part of the year D. throughout spring 58、 The amount of money you spend on your garden ______. A. can be large B. must be large C. can not be large D. must not be small 59、 Which of the following statements is TRUE? A. Vegetables need to have as much shading as possible. B. A small garden is much better than a large one. C. Homeowners can freely choose the soil for their vegetable garden. D. If possible, the vegetable garden should be close to your home. 60、 From the passage we can conclude that ______. A. vegetables need little care while growing B. vegetables can be grown on almost any kind of soil C. vegetable gardening is an indispensable part of life for urban and suburban people D. vegetable gardening is a good pastime for retired people ?. The fact that a good teacher has some of the gifts of a good actor doesn't 71 that he will indeed be able to act 72 on the stage, for there are very important 73 between the teacher's work and the actor's. The actor has to speak words which he has learnt by heart; he has to repeat exactly the 74 words each time he plays a certain part; 75 his movements and the ways in which he uses his voice are usually 76 beforehand. What he has to do is to make all these carefully learnt words and actions seem 77 on the stage. A good teacher 78 in quite a different way. His students take an active part in his 79 ; they ask and answer questions; they obey orders; and if they don't understand something, they will say so. The teacher therefore has to suit his act to the needs of his students. He cannot learn his part by heart, but must 80 it as he goes along. 61、 A. pay B. hold C. give D. know 62、 A. clear B. slow C. quick D. loud 63、 A. frightening B. fearing C. exciting D. pleasing 64、 A. act B. talk C. say D. repeat 65、 A. Translation Directions: In this part, there is one passage in English. Read the passage carefully and translate it into Chinese. 81、How do you learn about topical events? Where can you find out about things which are happening every day all over the world? You can read newspapers, listen to the radio or watch television. These three methods of communication bring daily news to millions of people everywhere. They are known as the mass media. The main job of a newspaper is to inform us about what is going on in the world. Newspapers are probably the least entertaining of the media, but they are the most informative. The news is gathered by reporters. The editor of a newspaper decides which items of news to publish and which page they will appear on. It is also his job to make sure that the piece is not too long, that the story is interesting and that people will be able to understand it when they read it. TV and radio stations also have reporters. They interview people and their interviews are filmed. The news editor decides which pieces of film to use in the television news every evening. Radio interviews are tape-recorded. An important source of world news for the broadcasting media is news agencies. There are several worldwide news agencies which employ correspondents in different places all over the world to make reports. These reports are gathered at the agencies' headquarters and then sent overseas by teleprinters. One of the most important jobs of the news editors at the radio and TV stations is re-writing these reports, for they are originally written for people to read in newspapers and magazines. Written language is often much more formal than spoken language, therefore they have to be re-written so that they sound natural when the news reader reads them over the air. ?. Writing 82、Directions: For this part, you are required to write a composition of 120 to 180 words. You should base your composition on the title and outline given below. Should College Students Establish a Business? Vocabulary and Structure 1、A 空格处后面跟的是动词不定式结构to help you,而在四个选项中,只有expect一个选项在意思上与句意相符,且能构成expect sb. to do sth. compare with sb./sth. for the purpose of是固定搭配,意为“为了……,目的是”。A、C、D三个选项都不能与for the...of构成符合句子意思的搭配,因此B为正确答案。 A(比…… keep on意为“继续”;depend on意为“依靠,取决下”;insist on意为“坚决要求,执意”;spend sth. on意为“花费,度过”。 四个选项中能与a large搭配并修饰不可数名词money的只有amount,构成短语a large amount of,意为“许多,大量”。 ?. Writing 82、Should College Students Establish a Business? At present, more and more college students have begun to establish businesses, and there is no consensus of opinion among people about it. Some people are for the view that college students should establish businesses. On the one hand, it is favorable for integrating theory with practice and promoting teachers' work. On the other hand, it is beneficial to train students' innovation abilities and arouse the students' interest in learning. While others take an opposite view, firmly believing that students should not establish businesses. They argue that college students' main task is to learn knowledge and lay a good foundation for a future career, and that establishing businesses will make them neglect their studies. As for me, the former notion is preferable in many senses, because university students' pioneering work can realize their personal value and cultivate their individual abilities.
