154. Paul is transferred to Caesarea. Acts 23:23
At this moment the commander called two of his soldiers and ordered them to get ready two hundred soldiers, seventy horsemen and two hundred spearmen, and have them ready to leave at nine o’clock that night to
take Paul to Governor Felix. He then wrote a letter to the Governor saying:
“Greetings. This man was seized by the Jews and they were about to kill him, so I arrived with my soldiers and rescued him because I knew he was a Roman citizen. I then brought him to their court so that I could see what the accusations were against him, but I found the accusations to be things about their law, which meant he had done nothing against the Roman government.
When I learned of a plot to kill him, I sent him to you so that he and his accusers could present their case.”
Paul arrived before the governor, but the governor said he would only speak to Paul once the group of accusers had arrived.
Paul is now slowly on his way to Rome, which Jesus said would happen. By looking at the hundreds of soldiers needed to protect Paul and the oath the men took, we see the hatred towards Jesus is huge. We also see how the commander believes Paul to be basically innocent, but how he has little power when faced with the hatred of the Jews.
