Thailand Cultural Day to bring Thai-style fun to Expo crowds From May 1st to Jun 10th 2010, Thailand Pavilion has received 1,342,744 visitors, on average 38,000 people per day, reaching the expected goal. The Thailand Pavilion brought a healthy dose of “sanook” – a word meaning “fun” in Thai – to Expo visitors on June 12 for Thailand Cultural Day. All the volunteers wear the traditional Thai dressing. There was plenty of audience participation as the Thai Pavilion dance troupe formed a large dance circle outside of the pavilion, and invited both thrilled Expo visitors as well as visiting Thailand Minister of Social Development and Human Security, Issara Somchai, to join the traditional dances. The traditional Thai music ensemble played such traditional songs as MA-ma-rum, which means “to come and enjoy.” Participating Expo visitors were excited to receive special edition Thailand Pavilion gifts decorated with the popular pavilion mascot “Tai”. The Thai dance troupe, already featured on many Chinese TV shows and celebrated for their combination of originality with traditional forms of Thai dance, performed a series of dances in glittering Thai traditional dress. The troupe’s performance included: The Four Regional Dances, or “Rum Si Pak,” which portrays four major traditional dances from around Thailand. They also showed Muay Thai, or Thai kickboxing – Thailand’s rhythmic, beautiful and powerful martial art, as well as performing the The State of Ramayana: The State of Ramayana is a story about the battle between Lord Rama and Tossakan who is the Giant King of Longka Kingdom. Thai musical instruments and rhythms were also featured. Traditional Thai music divides instruments into several types: blowing (wind instruments), plucking (plucked string instruments), striking (percussion instruments) and so on. There are almost 50 different traditional Thai instruments, and the Thai musical scale includes seven equal notes.
