American Values What will America's future be like? Will it continue to be prosperous and try to lead the world to peace and maybe even unite the countries in years to come? Maybe the future won't be so good and America will be conquered in war or just start to dwindle and fade into the world's past. To best understand what America's future will be like, you have to look at what has made it what it is today. Typically every American has the same basic values and traits that have originated from America's rich past and that gives America its identity. After studying them it's easy to comprehend what makes America so great. Americans have always had the same core values, which have evolved throughout the years. They have shaped and made our country successful. Individual liberty, education, and rugged individualism are only a few. Individual liberty is the cornerstone of American values. It's in every part of our society. The whole idea of an individual having control of their own destiny is the basic concept our government is based on and it guarantees the individual's rights. While large corporations dominate our economic system, the majority of America's businesses are Since the majority of the early settlers were Christian, they believed that they had a responsibility to improve themselves and be the best they could be, to develop their talents, and to help their neighbors. Remember that we live in a linear reality, everything in the past effects the future, but the future cannot effect the past. Americans also have many choices in one's own education. We aren't content sitting for hours at a time just talking to people like citizens of a lot of other countries are. For much of our history, there was a frontier and it greatly influenced American attitudes. There is also a belief that Americans should "be all they can be" which came from our Christian heritage. small, individual or family owned companies. We also tell what's on our mind with facial expressions and body language. In our country we are generally less concerned about history than people from older societies, instead we look ahead. This fundamental American belief in progress and a better future contrasts greatly with fatalistic attitudes of many cultures who consider the future to be up to "fate" or the few people in power that dominate the society. Americans have always believed in the goodness of humans. For the most part, Americans like action. In addition to other basic American values such as self-reliance, equality of opportunity, hard work, material wealth, and competition, we are seeing a trend toward conservation, especial with preserving the environment, and a greater sensitivity to cooperation on a global scale. Education is another of America's values. what is an american? What is an American? This is a idea that has been pondered by many in the past. Some consider an American to simply be anyone that has U.S. Citizenship, but in truth it is much more than this. A true and idealistic American has many characteristics that distinguish him from other people around the world. He is prideful in everything he possesses or accomplishes. He full-heartedly believes in a free-market system. The true American is very hardworking and competitive in everything he does, but is also respectful of others and their beliefs while keeping himself informed about important issues and events. These qualities constitute the ideal American and a model American citizen to others. Pride in one's work and possessions is a vital part of an ideal American. No matter what he does or makes, he strives to be proud of himself in his accomplishments. When the Eastern European immigrants arrived in the West in the end of the 19th Century, they had little money and resources, but were prideful in having and holding a job and place of living. (Jennings) An American is proud of America above all else, an idea well captured when president John F. Kennedy stated in a 1961 speech, "Ask not what your country can do for you- ask what you " (Santorum interview) Sometimes, however, with this pride come feelings that are detrimental to many people. In his mind, he believes that people are responsible for themselves and their families, and that the government should play a minimal role. An American will pride himself in owning and running a business and will want others to do the same. Independence is another important attribute of the ideal American. Today however, less and less people come to share these ideals. " (Man of the Century) This is what American political leaders push for, and it is a crucial part of being an American. Politicians frequently speak of "instilling traditional American values", but they fail to accomplish this. American Society now has lost sight of ideals like independence, as people demand that their government help them when they are unable to help themselves. They worked hard in their jobs building railroads, mining coal, and many other occupations, despite low wages and poor conditions. An ideal American keeps himself informed and knowledgable about events and issues in his world. all in all, he filed 44 anti-trust law suits". , but it involves difficult requirements, to which few of the citizens of America live up to.
