One day shortly after I turned 10, he was off the coast of Jamaica, far from our home in Miami. Mom was washing the dinner dishes when her face suddenly turned pale. “Mayday,” she whispered. Without wiping her hands, she grabbed the phone and called the Coast Guard, telling the man on duty she cared about her husband. “Yes, madam, we know your husband ran into some trouble,” he replied. “They’re having a heavy storm and he radioed in for help when his boat started taking in water. We flew out there about an hour ago and dropped him a pump (抽水机).” “I don’t believe the pump is working,” Mom insisted. “You need to do another fly-over.” The man tried to placate (安抚) Mom. “He must be all right, Mrs. Hemingway, or we would’ve heard from him.” “You haven’t gotten a Mayday?” “No, but we’ll let you know if we hear anything.” Mom hung up. Without saying a word, she went in and knelt by her bed. An hour passed. Mom came out, looking even more anxious. She called the Coast Guard again. This time she had steel in her voice. “You had better send a plane out right now or you’ll be finding the bodies of Leicester Hemingway and his crew.” They said they would send out a rescue plane as soon as possible. Mom was awake and early in the morning the phone rang. It was the Coast Guard. They’d found my father and his crew floating in the sea 15 miles off Jamaica. Dad’s boat had sunk, but all were safe. There are three basic kinds of strawberries: June bearing (结果期), ever bearing and day neutrals (日照中性). June bearing is ready in the spring, so they are also called spring bearing. But gardeners will not get a crop during the first spring after planting. Ever bearing, when planted after the last winter freeze, will produce fruit during spring or early summer. A second or sometimes third crop will be ready in late summer. Day neutrals produce fruit throughout the summer months. The Universityof Illinois Urban Extension says ever bearing and day neutrals are especially good for home gardens. Plant strawberries in the spring as soon as the soil is dry enough. Try to plant late in the day or on a cloudy day. The soil should cover just the roots and not the top of the plant. Branches will appear in a few weeks. Strawberries grown in containers need the soil of about twenty-five to thirty centimeters deep. Be sure the container has holes in the bottom. Strawberries grow well in loose soil that lets water pass through easily. Carl Wilson at the Colorado State University Extension suggests mixing about three to five percent organic (有机的) material into the soil. Part of caring for strawberries is renovation (翻新). Once the plants have produced fruit, they become less productive. Renovation means removing a lot of the old plants to let newer ones replace them. The Agricultural Extension Service at the Universityof Tennessee says growers should do this every year after harvest. Renovation also includes adding fertilizer (肥料). Adding in late summer will supply nutrients to the fruit for the following spring. 1. Ever bearing and day neutrals are suitable for home gardens because they . There might be five hundred apples on the tree, but each apple has just ten seeds. That’s a lot of 1 !
