Test 7 Reading Comprehension (40 minutes)
Directions: This part is to test your reading ability. There are some tasks for you to
fulfill. You should read the given materials carefully and do the tasks as you are
instructed.
Task 1
Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 questions or unfinished
statements, numbered 46 through 50. For each question or statement there are 4
choices marked A), B), C) or D). You should make the correct choice and mark
the corresponding letter in the Answer Sheet with a single line through the
centre.
The problem of names and faces was put to an experimental test in people to be studied
in 1934 by an American scientist, H. M. Clarke. He showed his subjects (试验对象) a page
containing photographs of the faces of twelve men and, under each photograph, there was a
name. The subjects had three minutes in which to study these names and faces by whatever
method they would usually use in learning the names of real people. Three minutes later,
remembering was tested in four different ways. The original names had to be recognized
when mixed up with a number of "new" names; the original faces had to be recognized from "
new" faces; the original faces were shown and the suitable names had to be recalled; and
the original names were shown and the corresponding faces recalled. Nearly 500 college
students acted as subjects in this experiment and the results were clear. It was easier to
recognize names than to recall them; but it was as easy to recognize names as to
recognize faces. If either names or faces were to be recalled, the remembering
performance was not as good as that involving recognition. Thus from the examples given
above, the difference between recalling and recognition should be clear.
46. What the scientist did was to test ____________.
A) the ability to learn names
B) the ability to recognize faces
C) remembering
D) recognition
47. Persons who took part in the test were ____________.
A) H.M. Clarke and his assistants
B) performers
C) American scientists
D) college students
48. "The original names" in Line 6 means ____________.
A) the informal names
B) the names of the twelve men
C) the first names
D) the family names
49. Which of the following statements is true?
A) These college students had the same trouble recalling names and faces.
B) It was quite possible to match these names and faces correctly.
1
B—
C) The results show that recognizing names and recognizing faces were both easy.
D) Many subjects had less difficulty in remembering names than in recognizing them .
50. Which of the following were not clearly stated?
A) Faces are easier to remember than names.
B) Recognition is usually easier than recalling.
C) Remembering can be tested in different ways by different people.
D) Photographs of the faces to be recognized were given to the subjects. Task 2
Directions: This task is the same as task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements
are numbered 51 through 55.
We live in a dangerous world. The figures for crime go up year by year. If you were
attacked in the street, would you be able to defend yourself? Not very well probably,
especially if someone was pointing a gun at you. We all see a lot of violence in films,
but recently some programs on television showed how people can defend themselves without
guns. For example, in one film a woman was attacked from behind. She threw the man, who
was heavier and stronger than she was, over her head. Then she held him tightly on the
ground. How? She knew judo.
Jiu-jitsu, as judo is sometimes called, means "muscle science" in Japanese. The
student of judo needs to learn a lot about the body, its bones and muscles. Judo uses a
number of "falls", "holds" and 'throws". Someone who does not know judo cannot defend
himself against them. If you know judo you can defend yourself against a person who is
stronger than you. You had better not practice judo on your friends unless they can fall
without hurting themselves! Being strong is one thing, but using the body wisely is
another. In judo, you use the other person's body to help you. You "throw" him to the
ground and "hold" him there, so that he cannot move. Of course, it takes time and practice,
but knowing judo is useful. In a violent world you ought to be able to defend yourself.
51. From the first paragraph, we know that some recent TV programs ____________.
A) show how people are attacked in the street
B) demonstrate how to use guns in defense
C) show that the figures for crime going up all the time
D) have changed their subjects from violence to self-defense
52. The woman mentioned in the passage ____________.
A) held the man over her head
B) was able to defend herself
C) attacked the man from behind
D) was heavier than the man
53. The name "Judo" refers to ____________.
A) a type of fighting by using the body wisely
B) a scientific way of physical training
C) an exercise to build up a strong body
D) bones and muscles in Japanese
54. What is the warning of the writer for a person who practises judo?
A) Avoid showing your skills to a person who knows judo.
B) Avoid attacking a strong man from behind his back.
2
B—
C) Not to try it on another person who is inexperienced.
D) Not to practise judo on the street.
55. We may infer from the context that a skillful judo fighter knows how to ___________.
A) avoid fighting with someone who doesn't know judo
B) learn the muscle science well
C) prevent the other person from being hurt
D) use the other person's body to increase his chances of success
Task 3

through No. 60) to it. You should give brief answers to these questions. The
answers should be no more than 8 words. Write them in the corresponding space
on the Answer Sheet.
For the past five years, 83-year-old Ernie has single-handedly transformed a
weed-choked, public-owned service road along the Los Angeles River into a beautiful
neighborhood park called "Ernie's Walk".
Back in 1988, weeds grew among broken benches, rusty(生锈的) automobile parts and old
refrigerators people had thrown along the bank of the river. It made Ernie sick. So he and
some neighbors complained until crews cleaned the mess. All that remained was a barren(荒
芜的) strip of dirt. Working in his garden one day, Ernie had more flowers than he could
plant, so he decided to place the extra flowers along the freshly cleared river bank. As
the flowers grew densely, so did an idea: why not dress the entire stretch of the bank?
At first Ernie planted flowers from his own garden. Then neighbors began donating(献

I am writing to thank you for the interesting reports which appeared in the
July/August '94 edition of the Saturday Evening Post. I am interested in your reports
since B12 deficiency(缺乏症) is an inherited disorder in my family. In the late 1950s
/early 1960s, a research project was carried out on it by a London medical school.
My grandmother was 49 when she started vitamin B12 injections in 1949. She was
admitted to the hospital with a blood disease. My mother was 63 when she began vitamin B12
injections. After reading your article, I believe her treatment was started too late. At
the time, she almost lost her eyesight and was told that she had other diseases.
Earlier this year, I visited my doctor and explained that I felt very tired and asked
for a blood test to establish whether I was suffering from B12 deficiency. I was told I
was much too young and that only people in their 80s suffered B12 deficiency. I told him
he was wrong and that research was carried out on my family 30-odd years ago.
I have always believed that prevention is better than cure. I now know why I love
Kellogg's Honey Nut Cornflakes(玉米片). They contain vitamins, including B12! If foods
contain added vitamins, as you suggest in your article, then B12 deficiency and diseases
associated with it should be left to the past.
51. The passage you have just read is most probably ____________.
A) a letter to the editor of a magazine
B) a preface to a book on Vitamins
C) an advertisement for vitamin B12
D) a thank-you letter to a medical doctor
52. Why is the author interested in the reports in The Saturday Evening Post?
A) He wanted to cure his family members of an inherited disorder.
B) He was curious about the latest medical developments.
C) He wanted to prevent himself from suffering from vitamin B12 deficiency.
D) He was seriously ill with vitamin B12 deficiency.
53. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
6
B—
A) The author was determined to get rid of the inherited disorder in his family.
B) Vitamin B12 deficiency can be prevented if measures are taken early.
C) Most foods contain vitamins, including B12.
D) Doctors are not always reliable.
54. The reports the author had read probably told him ____________.
A) to have regular vitamin injections.
B) not to believe his doctor.
C) to take food rich in vitamins.
D) to have his blood tested early.
55. Doctors think that the usual case of B12 deficiency occurs when ____________.
A) a person doesn't take foods containing vitamins
B) a patient stops vitamins injections
C) a person is very young
D) a patient is at an old age
Task 3

Third World countries often mistakenly decide to permit rapid industrialization. When
this industrialization occurs, many new factories open, and workers get jobs.
Unfortunately, many of those new jobs are not permanent. The leaders of an industry want
their factories to be as productive as possible, and they will do anything to achieve that
goal. Whenever they can, they take advantage of automation(自动化),which means that
workers are replaced by a more efficient machine. As a result, a worker trained for a
specific factory job becomes unemployed, and the profits of the factory owners are
maximized(最大).
Many experts in Third World economics are concerned about rapid industrialization
because it brings problems as well as progress. Citizens of these countries need jobs that
will last, not jobs that are temporary. In the opinion of these economists, the leaders of
Third World countries should be aware of the dangers as well as the advantages of rapid
industrialization.
56. What's wrong with the Third World countries' decision about industrialization
according to the author?
They allow ___________________________________________________________.
57. Will the new jobs created by the industrialization last long according to the author?

The key to its success is both the author's strong writing ability and the fact that
few people today know much about the man who founded the company called Standard Oil.
"The Profit Zone"
Here is the message of "The Profit Zone," by consultants A.J. Slywotzky and D. J.
Morrison, with B. Andelman, published by Time Business.
Instead, the authors say, companies must always be on the lookout for profitable new

Most people do not think of fishes and other sea animals as having voices, and of
those who are aware of the fact that many of them can "speak", few understand that these
"conversations" have significance. Actually, their talk may be as meaningful as much of
our own. For example, some sea animals use their "voices" to locate their food in the
ocean expanses; others use their "voices" to let their fellows know of their locations;
and still others, as a means of obtaining mates. Sometimes, "speaking" may even mean the
difference between life and death to a sea animal. It appears in some cases that when a
predator(食肉动物) approaches, the prey depends on no more than the sounds it makes to
escape.
Fish sounds are important to man, also. By listening to them, he can learn a great
deal about the habits of creatures that make them, the size of the school they form, the
patterns of their migrations(迁移), and the nature of the environments in which they
live. He can also apply this information to the more effective utilization of the
listening spots he has set up to detect enemy submarines(潜水艇). A knowledge of fish
sounds can avoid confusion and unneeded effort when a "new" sound is picked up and the
sound sentry(哨兵) must decide whether or not to call an alarm.
46. Among the people who know that many sea animals have voices, few ____________.
A) know the meaning of their conversations
B) realize that they can communicate with each other
C) realize that they can make speeches
9
B—
D) could understand their conversations
47. Which of the following statements can best be inferred from the passage?
A) Fishes only "speak" to communicate with each other.
B) Researches are now being made to study the significance of fish sounds.
C) Sea animals have a sharper hearing ability than men.
D) Sounds made by fish cannot be transmitted through the air.
48. By listening to sounds fishes make, man can learn all the following except ____________..
A) their sizes
B) the usual pattern of their migrations
C) their environments
D) their habits
49. In some cases, when a predator approaches, fishes escape on hearing ____________.
A) the sounds of other species
B) the sounds of their prey
C) the sounds of the approaching enemy
D) the sounds of their fellows
50. The last sentence means that a knowledge of fish sounds can help man to __________.
A) avoid confusion in fishing activity
B) avoid unneeded effort in fish sound studies
C) detect enemy submarines
D) pick up new sounds
Task 2
Directions: This task is the same as task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements
are numbered 51 through 55.
During the early American colonial years, corn was more plentiful than wheat, so corn
bread was more common than wheat bread. Friendly Indians showed colonists how to grow corn
and how to prepare it for food and pioneer women then improved the Indian cooking
techniques. When people traveled, they went on foot or horseback, sleeping and eating in
the forests. They carried corn bread for sustenance; the corn bread came to be called
"journeycake". Later when roads and taverns were built and stagecoaches carried passengers,

They stirred together water, a little water-ground cornmeal, potatoes, and salt. They set
the mixture, uncovered , in a warm place until it absorbed bacteria from the air and began
to ferment. Then they removed the potatoes and used the liquid as leavening for their
bread, made with white flour.
51. In colonial times, why was corn bread more common than wheat bread?
A) The colonists did not know how to make wheat bread.
B) Corn bread did not spoil rapidly

52. How did the colonists learn to make corn bread?
A) They knew the technique before they arrived in America.
B) They tried many times and found the right way to do it.
C) They changed their method of making white bread.

53. Why was corn bread called "journeycake"?
A) People took it with them when they traveled.
B) It was easy to prepare over an open fire in the forests.
C) Horses occasionally ate it if there was no grain available.
D) It was easy to ship from England.
54. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage about the preference for a
particular kind of corn bread?
A) It changes over a period of time.
