Material Aspects
Mr. Benny Au
10 November 2012
Material aspects is about reduce material
consumption, promote recyclable materials and
waste management ~
• Material reuse
• Standardized design
• Flexibility design
• Renewable material
• Sustainable timber
• Ozone depleting substances
• Waste management
Ecological Footprint
• Definition: The amount of biologically productive land
and sea area needed to regenerate the resources human
population consumes and to absorb and render harmless
the corresponding waste
• If the whole world would consume resources at the rate
Hong Kong does presently, we would need the equivalent
of TWO PLANETS to satisfy those needs
• REDUCE, RE-USE, RECYCLE!!!

Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC)
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are the major contributory
substances of the serious ozone depletion. The
reaction between a CFC and an ozone molecule in the
earth’s stratosphere contributes a catalytic destruction
of ozone. Due to ozone depletion, increased UV
exposure leads to the increase in skin cancer (e.g.
Malignant Melanoma and Cortical Cataracts), damage to
plants, and reduction of plankton population in the
ocean’s photic zone.

Landfill sites in HK
3 strategic landfills are:
• West New Territories (WENT) Landfill (in Nim Wan, Tuen Mun);
• South East New Territories (SENT) Landfill (in Tai Chik Sha, Tseung Kwan O);
• North East New Territories (NENT) Landfill (in Ta Kwu Ling)
from EPD website
Public Fill in HK
Public filling areas, public filling barging points, public fill stockpiling areas, fill
banks and C&D material recycling facility are managed by the Civil Engineering
and Development Department to accept public fill.
Public fill arises from construction, excavation, renovation, demolition and road
works. Comprising of rocks, concrete, asphalt, rubbles, bricks, stones and earth,
public fill is suitable for reuse in reclamation and site formation.
Hard materials such as rocks and concrete can be recycled as aggregates for
concrete/asphalt production or as granular materials for road sub-base and
drainage layers etc.
The strategy to manage public fill comprises the followings:
Reducing public fill at source through better planning, design and construction
management to reduce the overall volume of public fill produced.
Separating out waste such as timber, paper, plastic etc. to prevent public fill that
could be reused or recycled from going to landfills.
Reusing public fill in reclamation and site formation works where possible.
However, this is becoming increasingly difficult because of the drastic reduction of
reclamation and site formation works.
Recycling suitable public fill as recycled aggregates
