I was a new 36 and I gave an honest account of the students’ work. In Simon’s case, the grades were awfully low. He couldn’t read his own handwriting. 37 he was a www.3edu.net 教师助手 学生帮手 家长朋友www.3edu.net www.3edu.net 教师助手 学生帮手 家长朋友www.3edu.net bright student. How did I make such a life-changing 45 to that boy without even knowing it? What I finally came to 46 was one day, several months before, when some students were 47 reports in the front of the class, Jeanne spoke 48 , and to encourage her to raise her voice, I had said, “Speak up. Simon’s the expert on this. He is the 49 one you have to convince, and he can’t hear you in the 50 of the room.” That was it. From that day on, Simon had sat up straighter, paid more attention, 51 more, and became happy. And it was all because he 52 to be the last kid in the last row. The boy who most needed 53 was the one who took the last seat that day. It taught me the most 54 lesson over the years of my teaching career, and I’m thankful that it came 55 and positively. A(30% B(60% C(40% D(70% (B) Tuesday’s Amtrak derailment(脱轨)Philadelphia, which claimed eight lives and injured more than 200 others has turned the country’s attention to railroad safety. But for those commuters (每日往返上班者)questioning whether or not to board the next train, statistics may offer some reassurance(信心). According to the scientific journal Bandolier the lifetime odds of dying on a passenger train in the US are about one in 1,871,241. So trains are still one of the safest modes of transport; in 2013, 891 U.S. fatalities were linked to rail travel, while 32,700 people were killed in highway accidents. “Train accidents are rare," Dr. Zarembski, director of the railroad safety program, told The Huffmgton Post “Accident rate in 2014 was 2.2 accidents per million train miles, this number has been declining steadily.” But if you are still concerned about safety -----or if you’re just curious about which part of the train is the safest place to sit ----science has an answer for that too. The front car of a train is the most dangerous place in the event of a head-on collision, while the last car is less safe if the train is rear-ended(追尾). In fact, trains are nine times more likely to derail train to hit another train or car head-on or to get hit from behind, according to the Federal Railroad Administration. The administration found that there were about 13,200 derailments from 2005 to 2014,compared with about 1,450 collisions. Studies suggest that broken rails or welds are the leading cause of derailment, and these problems more often cause derailments near the front of the train. Therefore, choosing a car located in the middle, or one or two back from the middle of the train may be the safest bet, Ross Capon, president of the National Association of Railroad Passengers, told CBS New York. If you can’t get a seat near the midpoint of a train, there's another potential safety factor you might want to consider — namely, which way your seat is facing. “I prefer rear facing so that in most cases you are pushed back into the seat in the event of an emergency braking application.” Zarembski said. In general, aisle(过道)seats are safer than window seats, where a passenger is more likely to come in contact with broken glass or be thrown out of the train. Capon told CBS New York. Of course, in the very rare event of a catastrophic crash like www.3edu.net 教师助手 学生帮手 家长朋友www.3edu.net www.3edu.net 教师助手 学生帮手 家长朋友www.3edu.net Tuesday’s,there’s no guarantee that sitting in a certain place or facing a certain way means you’ll escape being injured. 58. What does the underlined word “fatalities” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean? A. Deaths. B. Rates. C. Accidents. D. Carriages. 59. In the first three paragraphs, the author is trying to ________. A. describe objectively the serious consequences a derailment may bring about B. urge people to consider carefully whether to board a train in the future C. impress on people the poor management of American railway lines D. persuade people with statistics that it is still safer to travel by train 60. After reading the passage, we can infer that it might be the safest to sit________ A. front facing on a window seat in the front cars B. front facing on an aisle seat in the last few cars C. rear facing on an aisle seat in the middle cars D. rear facing on a window seat one car behind the middle (C) WHAT is it that sets Spain apart from the rest of Europe? It might be “siestas”, the three-hour lunch break that is customary (惯例的) in the country. The Spanish start work at 8 or 9 am, but in the early afternoon they usually take a three-hour break. After lunch, people can be seen napping in cars or on benches. During hot summer afternoons, Spanish village streets are often totally deserted . When they return to their offices at 4 pm, Spanish workers often have to make up for the lost time by working until 8 or 9 pm. So, while most other Europeans are sound asleep, Spaniards are still having dinner or watching television. “Everything in Spain happens later, from meal times to broadcast entertainment,” described AP. “This work schedule is a Spanish cultural vice,” said Nuria Chinchilla, head of the International Center on Work and Family at the University of Navarra in Barcelona. “Changing to the European schedule should be the most urgent (紧急的) project for the government.” Many Spanish people complain about their never-ending workdays, and some even think the issue has affected the country’s development. “In Spain we sleep almost an hour less than the World Health Organization recommends,” lawmakers in the Spanish parliament wrote in a proposal. “This has a negative effect on productivity, stress, accidents and school dropout rates.” That’s why, last September, they recommended that the government turn back the clocks by one hour, then the lunchtime break would be cut to an hour or less. And a regular eight-hour workday would be introduced. However, some doubt that changing the time zone would reverse low productivity, which comes more from the country’s service-oriented economy (服务 型经济), according to Maria Angeles Durant, a sociologist with the Spanish National Research Council. But Ignacio Buqueras, the president of the Association for the Rationalization of Spanish Working Hours, told The New York Times that “changing the Spanish www.3edu.net 教师助手 学生帮手 家长朋友www.3edu.net www.3edu.net 教师助手 学生帮手 家长朋友www.3edu.net schedule would allow families more free time together and boost Spain’s economy.” The Spanish government is treating the campaign seriously, but it hasn’t taken any action yet, reported The New York Times. Spain’s siesta is not actually a product of its relaxed Mediterranean (地中海的) culture. At the start of the 20th century, Spain had the same working hours as many parts of Europe. It was during World War II that the country moved the clocks forward to align (结盟) them with those of Nazi Germany. The same thing happened in Portugal. After the defeat of Hitler, Portugal returned to Greenwich Mean Time, but Spain did not. 61. What’s the main idea of the passage? A. Spain hopes to boost its economy by changing its work schedule. B. Spain will change the time zone to allow families more free time together. C. Spain’s long lunch set it apart from the rest of Europe. D. The typical workday in Spain includes a long break at lunch. 62. What does the underlined word “siesta” in paragraph 1 mean? A. nap B. afternoon tea C. lunchtime break D. noon 63. Which of the following is not the benefit of changing the Spanish work schedule? A. change the structure of its service-oriented economy B. Allow families more free time together C. Boost Spain’s economy D. Reverse low productivity 64. What can you infer from the passage? A. The present work schedule in Spain has existed for over 100 years. B. Many countries in Europe arrange their work schedules according to Greenwich Mean Time. C. The present work schedule has a negative effect on productivity. D. The Spanish government has taken some action to change the work schedule. (D) This is Allison Volk. Okay, let me just be clear: I don’t believe that anyone of us can “run out of” or “kill” our creativity and there’s no way to “use it all up”. That’s simply impossible, because creativity is so inborn and built into human beings. However, there are ways to expand that creativity so it can flourish (繁荣), and there are ways to squash (压制) that creativity so it feels completely forgotten. Does that sound familiar? Have you ever felt like your creativity was squashed? One of the ways to squash your creativity is to spend too much time on the social media. I could see someone making an argument that the social media makes them more creative in a way, and sure, it might give you some cool ideas, but just imagine this situation for a moment with me: It’s 5:00 p.m. on a Wednesday night, and you have the evening to yourself. Your Facebook-addicted mind pulls you toward the social network to find out if your co-worker has responded to your message and how many people have “liked” your photos since last weekend. www.3edu.net 教师助手 学生帮手 家长朋友www.3edu.net www.3edu.net 教师助手 学生帮手 家长朋友www.3edu.net You can’t resist (忍耐) any longer, so you sign in and you feel satisfied when you see that your photos got 103 likes but then you’ll feel upset when you see that your friends got more. During that 30 minutes, you could have put pen to paper and written a blog article or you could have worked on a Shakespeare’s play but you don’t and by the time you finally force yourself to shut down the computer, you feel kind of blue. You switch on the television and rest until it’s time to go to bed. As a result, creativity disappears. If we’re being really honest here, then yes, I admit that the picture I just painted for you has been me. Many times, it takes conscious effort for me not to get addicted to “checking Facebook” mode but instead to do something that actually is good for may brain. Those times when I fail — when I am caught in “likes” and friend requests — I find that my burning desire to be creative, the same desire that causes me to write plays, film scripts and start a theater company, is kind of , well, decreased. That won’t be tolerated! Here’s what I do in those situations to get my creativity back, reconnect with my life force and get some juices flowing again. Obviously, the first step is to take a break from the social media, setting it aside. Just like spending hours playing a video game, you’ll feel dull inside when it’s all over. And then we can go outside. Oh, I love this one because being active on the social media is difficult when you’re outside. Not only is it hard to read what’s happening on your screen against the bright, smiling sun but it’s also difficult to even care what’s going on in the Twitterverse when there’s a beautiful bird singing on a tree branch! Actually, nature is full of life-giving energy and a passion for being alive. Even if I step outside my Los Angeles door and I’m greeted with lots of buildings and a few brave trees, I feel better. So take a walk, smell the smells, see the sights, breath the fresh air, let your mind wander and feel alive. Necessarily, you will get ideas when you walk. Maybe the idea is something as simple as, “Hm, I want crackers and cheese for a snack...”. The ideas that you have when you’re walking in nature or spending time alone with yourself are valuable, so honor those ideas and follow your interest and creativity! There’s nothing wrong with the social media, of course; but we do have to remember that it’s completely addictive. I wouldn’t be surprised if social media addiction is a “thing” in my lifetime. You know yourself and your style of creativity better than anyone, and I’d love to hear how you deal with staying creative on a day-to-day basis! 65. According to the passage, the author believes that our creativity _______. A. will run out one day B. can be killed totally C. can be squashed D. keeps growing stronger 66. What does the underlined part “the picture” in Paragraph 5 refer to? A. One of the photos the author took. B. The blog article the author wrote. C. The author’s feelings when checking Facebook. www.3edu.net 教师助手 学生帮手 家长朋友www.3edu.net www.3edu.net 教师助手 学生帮手 家长朋友www.3edu.net D. The author’s personal experiences with the social media. 67. How did the author respond when she found her friends had more “likes”? A. She was in very low spirits. B. She was deeply touched. C. She was angry with others. D. She stopped visiting Facebook. 68. What can we infer from Paragraph 6? A. The author has discovered her own problems. B. The author once failed to get involved in the social media. C. The author has succeeded in writing many film scripts. D. The author once dreamed of opening a theater company. 69. Why does going outside help the author get her creativity back? A. Because it consumes lots of her physical strength. B. Because it makes her re-recognize nature. C. Because it helps her get rid of all those dull ideas. D. Because it make her hard to focus on the social media. 70. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph probably mean? A. The author hopes that there is no social media addiction. B. The author thinks that social media addiction is common. C. The author believes that social media addiction is in great demand. D. The author feels that social media addiction is surprising. 五、任务型阅读(共 10 小题;每小题 1 分,满分 10 分) 请阅读下面短文~并根据所读内容在文章后#格#中的空格里填八一个最恰当 的单词。 注意:每个空格只填一个单词。 Advergaming, which features in-game ads and major video games, is an advertising and marketing concept that has been increasingly used by many companies to promote their products. For all those who are new to this marketing concept, advergaming is a great combination of advertising and video games. The lnternet is flooded with different types of advergames that have been created to advertise all types of brands from fast food chains, soda companies, car companies, clothing, to recruitment (招募) in the military. Advergames are classified into three categories: associative, illustrative (说明性的) and demonstrative (示范性的) advergames. The type of the advergame chosen is based on the brand image and the message that needs to be communicated. The popularity of advergames is demonstrated by the fact that companies are willing to spend quite a lot in developing these games. This is because improving brand awareness is easier with advergames because they are fun, engaging and sometimes challenging. This helps in brand remembering. Advergames are a perfect way to target the hard-to-reach, technology-savvy (精通技术的) young market, especially teenagers. Many of these gamers do not mind, and even like the ads in the games. Compared to traditional channels of marketing and advertising, like television and www.3edu.net 教师助手 学生帮手 家长朋友www.3edu.net www.3edu.net 教师助手 学生帮手 家长朋友www.3edu.net print media, game are a low-cost marketing tool. Unlike half a milling dollars which is needed to produce a 30-second commercial, a video game can be developed in , 50,000. Another advantage over traditional marketing media involves the viewing time. Unlike television commercials which last for 30 seconds, and print ads which may or may not get even that time, video games keep the consumer absorbed for 7 to 10 minutes at a time. Moreover, consumers can log in and play any time, thus helping in increasing the ad exposure time. Opposition(反对) to advergames that are created by fast food companies and candy manufactures to target children is based on the fact that children younger than15 do not recognize that advergames are advertisements. Since they persuade on a subconscious (潜意识的), emotional level, these ads can change a child’s behavior. High salt, sugar and fat product advertisements are banned in children’s TV programs. With advergames, advertisers try to break the loophole (漏洞) and get direct access to their target group. Without nutritional information and the pressure, potential consumers to purchase these products can suffer several moral issues. Not all advergames are used properly to send the message across. Even if the game is widely popular, people may not acknowledge or notice the billboard (广告牌) featuring the product in the background. Despite their limitations, advergames are a great way to reach out to the audience. Advergaming is a win-win choice for both advertisers who get their message across effectively, and consumers who have a fun and interactive way of knowing about new products. Advergaming Introduction It refers to a marketing concept that advertising and video games are (71)________ to promote products.
