They knew that things weren't right at home. So yesterday morning they wanted to go out. Bob put them out through a window because he couldn't open the door. The snow was two metres deep outside. Last night they didn't come back. “Dead,”Bob thought. “They are only five months old. This winter kills.”But at mid-morning Bob heard them calling him. He looked out and could not believe they were dragging a big hare through the snow. They dropped him through the window into Bob's hands. Hare for dinner. For the next twelve years he wrote wildly, and lived even wilder life and was especially fond of drinking. He never settled down. He served as a newspaper reporter in Asia at the time of the war between Russia and Japan, and did the same job in the Mexican Civil War in 1914. He liked the excitement of it. Where there was fighting London was always there. So it was not surprising to hear that he died at the young age of forty on November 22, 1916. 6 A: because of his name B: because he drank wildly C: because of his book “The Call of the Wild” D: because he loved to report wars A: 1912 B: 1903 C: 1874 D: 1876 Every country has its heroes. The heroes are the people the nation and especially the young people admire. If you get a list of the heroes of a nation, it will tell you the potential (潜力)of that nation. If today in America, you ask the high school students to list their heroes, their choice would probably fall into three groups. The first group of heroes would be the rock stars—the people associated with rock music. There is no doubt that such people do have talent but one wonders if one should hold up rock stars as a model. The rock stars too often are involved with drugs and their personal life is not all that good. The rock stars are rich and wear the latest fashion styles. However, one should seek more in a hero than such things as money and good clothes. A second type of hero for the American youth is the sports star. Again you have a person who has a great ability in one area—sports. However, too often the personal life of the sports star is a bit of a mess. Too frequently drugs and drinking are a part of life of the sports star. A third group of hero is the T.V. or movie star. This person may have lots of acting talent and is quite handsome. However, the personal life and conduct of too many actors are quite sad and they should not be held up as a model for young people. Today, the rock star, the athlete, and the actor all have become the models of the youth in America. Really, do you hear a young person say that his hero is a doctor, a teacher, or a scientist? These people are not rich and do not wear fashionable clothes. However, they are talented, people who work hard to make the world a better place for everyone. What is really sad is that the young try to imitate their heroes. They like to wear the same clothes and follow their styles. If the heroes of today for the American youngers are limited only to rock stars, athletes and actors, the future does not look too bright. A: a person who has done something brave. B: a person who plays an important role in a play. C: a person people greatly admire. D: a person who rides the waves and moves with the tides. 7 A: They are not bright but are good-looking. When a person does a certain thing again, he is impelled(推动,迫使) by some unseen force to do the same thing repeatedly; thus a habit is formed. Once a habit is formed, it is difficult, and sometimes impossible, to get rid of. It is therefore very important that we should pay great attention to the formation of habits. Children often form bad habits, some of which remain with them as long as they live. Older persons also form bad habits as long as they live, and sometimes become ruined by them. There are other habits which, when formed in early life, are of great help. Many successful men say that much of their success has something to do with certain habits in early life, such as early rising, honesty and thoroughness. Among the habits which children should not form are laziness, lying, stealing 8 and so on. These are all easily formed habits. Unfortunately older person often form habits which ought to have been avoided. We ought to keep from all these bad habits, and try to form such habits as will prove good for ourselves and others. A:to form bad habits„to form good habits B:to form good habits„to form bad habits C:to form such habits as will prove good„to get rid of them D:forming good habits„forming such bad habits as laziness and so on As far back as 700 B.C:, man has talked about children being cared for by 9 wolves. Romulus and Remus, the legendary (old story) twin founders of Rome, were said to have been cared for by wolves. It is believed that when a she-wolf loses her litter, she tries to get a human child to take its place. This seemingly foolish and unreasonable idea did not become believable until the late nineteenth century when a French doctor actually found a ten-year-old boy having nothing on wandering in the woods. He didn't walk upright, could not speak under standably, nor could he relate to people. He only growled (made a low, threatening sound) and stared at them. Finally the doctor won the boy's confidence and began to work with him. After many long years of devoted and patient teaching, the doctor was able to get the boy to clothe and feed himself, recognize and say a number of words, as well as write letters and form words.
