Former Canadians who lost citizenship as a minor (under the age of 21) between January 1, 1947, and February 14, 1977, do not have to become a permanent resident and live in Canada for one year in order to resume citizenship. They can apply immediately. On April 17, 2009, the law will change and many former Canadians will reacquire citizenship without having to make any application. Former Canadians who do not become citizens under the new law may still apply to resume citizenship after meeting the current requirements.
