Dirk DirkDirk Dirk Nowitzki NowitzkiNowitzki Nowitzki Roddman is famous for his superb rebounding ability. Do you know why? Imagine yourself standing in front of Rodman in the air, then you will know why. I am not saying that Dennis gets all the rebounds by fouling. This is because a good, aggressive play is just half a step away from a foul play. Denis's strong power, will, and vertical leap makes him arguably the best rebounder in the NBA ever. Rebounding is one of the major aspects of the game. For some players, rebounding is THE game, their only duty on the court. It is typically a big guy's job. Under the rim, you will find warriors. They fight battles and they shed sweat and blood. That's not an exaggeration. Inside the paint, people literally fight for a superior position, they will push you, elbow you, and do every little things that might gain an edge against you. Just how important is rebounding? Whenever you grab a rebound, your team gainsgainsgainsgains a chance to shoot again while the other team actually losesloseslosesloses it. The difference is double. While good footworkfootworkfootworkfootwork and vertical leap is the major determinant of rebounds. It does require experience to become a good rebounder such as anticipating where the ball is landing. For example, the longer the shot or harder the rim, the farther the bounces. Simple physics. For offensive rebounds, you will have to fight for the position under the basket. Remember that the point to offensive rebound is to earn you an edge. So do not commit the whole team to offensive rebound, else the other team will make you pay - one long pass will easily make the ball end up in the other side of the court. Always have someone stationed at the top of the key ready to retreat. If you are out-rebounded, stand in his face and prevent him from passing immediately. Meanwhile, for defensive rebounds, you will probably be in a favorable advantage. So box out and prevent the perimeter offensive players from getting an offensive rebound and an easy basket. Your primary job should be thinking how to prevent the other team from grabbing it instead of grabbing the rebound itself. If you are unable to grab the rebound, but successful in preventing your guy from getting the rebound, you have done your job. Soft shooters shoot at higher arc and produces rebounds that are close to the rim. Hard shooters do the opposite. When the ball hits the rim, find your guy and make contact! Obviously if he is way off from the rim, stay inside and wait for the rebound. Don't be afraid to make contact, but don't use your arms to push, use your body to advance. So to be a good rebounder, always assume a shot will never go in and be ready in rebounding position. • ObserveObserveObserveObserve whichwhichwhichwhich playerplayerplayerplayer areareareare softsoftsoftsoft orororor hardhardhardhard shooters.shooters.shooters.shooters. • DiscoverDiscoverDiscoverDiscover howhowhowhow hardhardhardhard thethethethe rimsrimsrimsrims are.are.are.are. • AnticipateAnticipateAnticipateAnticipate wherewherewherewhere thethethethe ballballballball willwillwillwill land.land.land.land. • BoxBoxBoxBox outoutoutout youryouryouryour opponent.opponent.opponent.opponent. It follows that it wins the fewest praise among all aspects of the game. Rodman is one of the few legendary dominators right below the rim notorious for his monstrous rebounding ability. What makes people recognize his rebounding ability is his offensive rebounding ability. We know he jumps high and is muscular, but what makes him so freaken good at offensive rebounding? No basketball rule says that each team only gets to shoot the ball once. You still have every right to the ball on offense. You can apply all of the same principles of the defensive rebound to that of the offensive rebound. Boxing out is important, but it may be difficult to get your body in front of the defending player. Preventing the other rebounders to jump is also important, but there may be too many opposing rebounders to prevent them from jumping. Not to mention that he has the determination to do it again and again. Most importantly, he has AnticipationAnticipationAnticipationAnticipation. He is able to anticipate where the ball is. This comes from countless number of hours of practice. Roddman is able to approximate the rebounding route of the ball right after the ball leaves the shooter's hand. The anticipation has become his reboundingreboundingreboundingrebounding instinctinstinctinstinctinstinct after all those practice. With this anticipation, Roddman can use his agility to get to the rebounding position before the defense. Your best chance of grabbing from the rebound will be tapping the ball away from the board, where your teammates will outnumber theirs. Don't rebound too aggressively and forget about the defense. Treat offensive free throw rebound as a bonus possession. Rebound only if the defense are sloppy in retrieving the rebound. MovingMovingMovingMoving ProductivelyProductivelyProductivelyProductively andandandand ActivelyActivelyActivelyActively AroundAroundAroundAround TheTheTheThe DefenseDefenseDefenseDefense As a player moves toward and around an opponent (the defense rebounder who is boxing out), the player should consider the most effective way to circle while still maintaining high speed. The fastest way to go around the opponent is by leaning leaning towards him as close as possible with the nearest shoulder. Also, the near foot should step around the defense in an attempt to position the toe in the direction the player plans to go. Once the near shoulder clears the defense, the player should move the arms aggressively to help provide balance as well as boxing out the defense. Cutting on the inside leg does present risk because of the greater muscular force required to control the higher degree of angular acceleration. If the muscles are weak, injury potential may be greater while cutting on the inside leg. Practicing the technique in slowly increased speed intervals, along with constructive strengthening exercise, will enhance the ability of the muscle to perform over time. WhatWhatWhatWhat happenshappenshappenshappens afterafterafterafter anananan offensiveoffensiveoffensiveoffensive rebound?rebound?rebound?rebound? A pump fake works well after an offensive rebound. The defense is already off balance having been beaten the rebound, and the defenders are mentally discouraged. There a good chance they swipe at the first hint of a shot. Alternately, depending on the situation, you can always pass it back and reinitiate the offense to chip away at the clock should your team has the upper hand DefensiveDefensiveDefensiveDefensive ReboundReboundReboundRebound I remember one of my coaches at the college basketball training camp made this opening line during a rebounding session: "Missing a defensive rebound gives your team 30 more seconds of misery and mystery." With reasonably strong physique, careful positioning and cooperation with teammates to protect the area below the basketball rim, grabbing a defensive rebound is as easy as grabbing an ice-cream out of a child's hand. Losing one, on the other hand, thwarts your own team's confidence and builds up the stress and frustration level of your teammates, who felt relieved for one second when the basketball did not go in. Hence, securing all defensive rebounds is very important. VeryVeryVeryVery important!important!important!important! Unlike offensive rebound, which depends on instinct, the offending player's ability and observation, and luck, securing a defensive rebound preparation waywaywayway beforebeforebeforebefore the rebounding moment and great teamwork. As the defending team, to maximize the probability of your grabbing the defensive rebound, there are basically twotwotwotwo main things that you must do: Having maximum coverage of all possible route by which the ball rebounds off the rim and getting all offending players out of possible rebounding position. When a shot is released, maintain contact with your opponent and immediately face towards the basket. It is important for your to maintain full contact with him so he has no where to maneuver his body to a better position. A properly boxed out opponent is completely helpless in collecting the rebound. If you notice your man wants to back out and use his quickness to get to a new position, stick your back close to him as long as he is close to the paint. Your teammate is responsible for the other players they are guarding. If you are playing zone defense, you are responsible for anyone coming through your zone. You should never allow anyone entering your zone. Sometimes you will get two or more people in your zone at any one time and you need to be able to make the decision which one of them is the most likely to get the rebound. Here is a good tip when you are boxing out on defense. Create an o-rebound zone with your arms and your teammates' arms, a place where you are not going to let anyone in. Be very conscious of anyone going in and out of that zone and be prepared when a shot goes up to block anyone who is in your zone. If your opponent has possession of the ball. You will be facing him before he shoots the ball. But right after he releases, spread your arms maintain contact with your face and face the basket immediately. • ---- BoxBoxBoxBox outoutoutout youryouryouryour opponent.opponent.opponent.opponent. • ---- LookLookLookLook forforforfor contactcontactcontactcontact andandandand useuseuseuse youryouryouryour bodybodybodybody weightweightweightweight • ---- TheTheTheThe keykeykeykey totototo defensivedefensivedefensivedefensive reboundingreboundingreboundingrebounding areareareare positioningpositioningpositioningpositioning andandandand leverageleverageleverageleverage.... DefensiveDefensiveDefensiveDefensive freefreefreefree throwthrowthrowthrow reboundingreboundingreboundingrebounding Your team will be in an advantage of the two closest spots to the hoop. But don't think you will get the rebound just because of that. If the other team has a great rebounder, it would be wise to have two players block the big man out. Always keep one player on the free throw line to box out the shooter. whereas the shooter cannot leave the free throw line until the ball hits the rim. Having the free throw shooter grab his own rebound is unforgivable. The leg closest to the ball should have very little weight applied to it. This shift in body weight to the plant leg helps to avoid a load force on the inside leg while twisting on it. Move the arms aggressively to help provide balance. These upper and lower body techniques will improve performance as well as avoid injuries. Howimportantisreboundinginbasketball?
