USA AND BRITISH HISTORY

INSTRUCTORS: Wrocław University, Department of History.
FORMAT: Lecture.
CONTENT: The lecture focuses on the political and social history of the UK and
USA. The discussion covers the following British topics: early history up to 1485, the
reigns of Henry VII and Henry VIII, the Reformation, the reign of Elizabeth I and the
birth of the modern nation, the Puritan revolution and the Restoration, Enlightenment
Britain, industrial revolution , the Victorian period, the XXc. overview. The American
section comprises: Pre-Columbian cultures, Explorers from Europe, Virginian
beginnings, Puritan New England, colonial life, Revolution, the formation of the new
nation, years of growth and conflict, the Civil War, Reconstruction, railroads,
cattlemen and farmers, the end of Indian America, industries, immigration, WWI, the
20s, the Great Depression, Roosevelt’s New Deal, WWII, prosperity and problems,
Black America, the Cold War, contemporary politics.

OBJECTIVES: To provide students with essential knowledge about the history of the
UK and USA, partly as background information for the study of literature, and partly
to help students comprehend the modern development of both countries as rooted in
history and tradition.
ASSESSMENT: end-of-term examination.
