No one is a failure who continues to try. It takes patience, perseverance and the knowledge that you can succeed if you try."   A dire warning from her doctor and a sobering family history got Mary’s attention. Weight Watchers Online helped her change her life. Today, this self-proclaimed "compulsive snacker" shares how she survives Girl Scout cookie season.   I could start my story from when I was little and talk about my family’s influence on me with regard to eating and smoking, but I fear it isn’t really unique. I come from a large Italian family where pasta and cannoli are staples in our diet. I am the youngest of 23 first cousins on my father’s side, the majority of them smokers with weight problems.   The obesity and smoking have led to an epidemic of disease throughout my family. There is a long history of lung cancer, emphysema, diabetes and coronary heart disease. Someone might think that with a history like that I would keep my weight and smoking habits in check. Instead, I found myself overweight and smoking two to three packs of cigarettes a day by the time I was 20.   My wake-up call came the day my doctor looked me straight in the eye and told me that if I didn’t make some serious changes I would be another statistic. I was found to have a congenital heart condition, and I felt myself hitting rock bottom as I couldn’t even complete 10 minutes of the cardio stress test I took that day.   I went home and started my search online for the best weight-loss option available. I subscribed to Weight Watchers Online and started following the POINTS? Weight-Loss System. I liked the idea of following the plan online, because I didn’t have a lot of time to attend meetings. I travel quite a bit for work and knew I would have the internal motivation to follow the plan online. I also admit that I’m not really a "people person." The online plan allowed me to experience all the benefits of Weight Watchers without the social interaction of a meeting.   As I got underway with the plan I learned a lot about my eating habits. I realized that one of my greatest obstacles was my snacking. I lovingly refer to myself as a "compulsive snacker" with a bottomless stomach. I had to learn strategies around snacking, such as only buying single-serve portions or simply not bringing certain foods in the house.   As far as the Italian foods and Girl Scout cookies go, I do my best to limit my exposure to them. Every once in a while I indulge. The secret is to record everything I eat — regardless of what it is — right down to the last cookie, and start anew the next day or next moment. This is a lifelong change, and I can’t expect myself to be perfect. I would go nuts!   My proudest moment came when I felt that I had reached a point of understanding weight loss and weight maintenance, I decided to quit smoking. I knew from past experiences that I couldn’t tackle both at once. I was right. I have now been smoke-free for over two years. A feat that I could not have achieved without the confidence and skills I learned through the weight-loss process.   Today, I am working out five days a week. I enjoy a combination of walking, jogging, strength training and my favorite, boxing. All of this from the woman who couldn’t survive 10 minutes on a treadmill. It has been a fight, but worth every struggle. The biggest thing I learned is never to give up. No one is a failure who continues to try. It takes patience, perseverance and the knowledge that you can succeed if you try.   Mary’s Tips   When traveling, call ahead to ask about exercise facilities on site. If there is not an exercise room or equipment available, ask at the front desk for a walking route of the surrounding area.   When your flight is delayed, take time to walk the terminal. Remember you are about to sit for several hours; take the time now to get additional walking in.   Don’t deprive yourself. If you completely cut out foods and drinks that you love, you’ll only set yourself up to go on a binge of those items later. Set aside a couple of POINTS? values to indulge on your favorite treats so you won’t feel like you’re completely missing out on them.   If you are craving something sweet, chew sugar-free gum. It will give you the sweetness you’ve been looking for without any added POINTS values.   Try yoga. It’s a great low-impact workout that almost anyone can do. Not only will it increase your strength and balance, but it will also help you stay focused and will remind you to keep breathing.
