BVP-900P/950P
BVP-900P/BVP-950P
Sony Colour Video Cameras
The BVP-900P Studio Camera and the BVP-950P Portable Camera are a new camera family for
Studio and Outside Broadcast applications. Based on the DSP technology of the Sony BVP-500,
but with a new-generation 12-bit signal processor, they meet the critical performance and
operational demands of programme producers, camera crews and video engineers. Combining
the latest DSP technology with powerful developments in CCD imaging, the BVP-900P and the
BVP-950P bring new standards in picture quality and outstanding functionality - but with the
economic advantages of digitization.

New Control Flexibility
There is a growing requirement to be able to manipulate image parameters to achieve various ‘looks’.
Typical programme examples are drama, pop video and talk shows. The new ADSP used in the
BVP-900P/950P provides this flexibility by providing new adjustments for highlight, detail and other
critical parameters.
Highlight Handling
Knee Saturation Control:
A disadvantage of conventional knee
circuitry is that saturation is reduced in
high brightness parts of a subject. With
Knee Saturation Control, the ‘washed
out’ appearance is reduced and a more
natural colour reproduction is achieved
in areas of high brightness.

Sensitivity: F10 with OHB-750WSAP/ 730WSP/730P and F8 with OHB-750AP
(at 2000 lx 89.9% reflectance)
Smear Level: -145 dB (FIT), 120 dB (IT switchable)
Adaptive Highlight Control: By
changing the knee transfer curve
according to the luminance range of the
CCD pixels, the BVP-900P/950P can
reproduce a wide dynamic range effec-
tively, for example the bright image of an
outdoor scene observed through a win-
dow. This new function operates only for
input video levels in excess of the knee
point to maintain colour matching in
multi-camera operations. Middle and low
luminance parts are not changed.
A/D Conversion and ADSP (Advanced Digital Signal Processing)
The new, advanced processor provides 12-bit A/D
conversion with many important additional functions to
provide the highest possible picture performance. It brings
enhanced basic resolution, extends image detail correction,
provides more flexible control of colourimetry and adds
greater control on over-exposed signals.
The CCDs used in the BVP-900P/950P are available in 4:3
and 16:9/4:3 switchable formats and with IT and FIT
structures. Most types have Power HADTM technology, which
provides increased sensitivity and a lower smear level.

Other Control Functions
3D White Shading: Unlike conventional White Shading which uses simple vertical and horizontal sawtooth and parabola waveforms, the
BVP-900P/950P computes the optimum shading required for every one of 1024 individual zones. This provides significantly more precise con-
trol of White Shading.
Skin Tone Auto Iris: This is a function that controls the lens iris to maintain the same video level in those areas of the picture which have been
selected for Skin Tone Detail control. An example for the use of this function is in a news studio where the exposure of the announcer’s face is
not affected by pages of the script being turned over.
Multi Matrix: Multi Matrix is designed to avoid the interaction between colours that can occur with conventional colour matrix adjustment. With
Multi Matrix, the 360 degree hue range is divided into 16 parts, each of which can be independently adjusted.
Black Gamma: This serves to increase the slope of the gamma characteristic in low light areas of the picture.
Adaptive Detail Control: Adaptive Detail Control provides natural
details without Black Digital aliasing effects by reducing, rather than
clipping, the detail signal for high contrast signals.
Electronic Soft Focus: This function of
the BVP-900P/950P has a similar effect to
that of a soft focus filter. It reduces the
sharpness of an image by subtracting the
detail signal from the original signal. This
is especially useful when combined with
the Skin Tone Detail function, when a
rough complexion can be smoothed. This
softer picture has its own detail
enhancement so that the ability of the
camera operator to find focus is not
compromised.
Fine Detail Control: For more natural reproduction, the BVP-900P/950P provides the ability to reduce the H-Detail width of the detail signal with-
out moving the peak frequency of the enhancement signal.
Triple Skin Tone Detail Control: This feature allows different amounts of detail to be applied to different skin tones. However the degree of con-
trol is such that it can be used to increase or decrease the amount of detail applied to areas of any three colours.

Flexible System Operation
The BVP-900P and the BVP-950P are fully compatible with Sony’s new generation Camera Control Units.
They can also be used with BVP-500P Series conventional camera systems via Sony MSUs, CNUs and
RCPs. Cameras connected to one CCU may be transferred to operate with the other CCU without
readjustment.
Wide Band Triax Transmission System
The BVP-900P/950P is intended for optimized picture performance in outside broadcast applications as
well as in the production studio. Major sporting and entertainment events regularly call for extended runs
of the triaxial cable connecting the camera head unit to the remote CCU. Sony has implemented a totally
new triax system design in the BVP-900P/950P. This wide band triax system extends the video
transmission bandwidth (luminance signal: 10 MHz, colour difference signals: 6 MHz,) while it maintains
the important philosophy of a Y/R-Y/B-Y component triax transmission. The Y/R-Y/B-Y triax system has the
distinct advantage of avoiding differential time delay between R/G/B channels (which may, on extended
cable runs, reduce luminance horizontal resolution and defeat the CCD spatial offset alias-reduction.) The
following benefits are provided by the wideband Y/R-Y/B-Y triax system.
The whole camera system can be operated with exceptionally low noise and thus
transmits the full-band of camera signals to the CCU output via this triax system.
The Sony Y/R-Y/B-Y wideband triax system allows long cable operation up to 2000 m
via 0/ 14.5 mm cable (1000 m via 0/ 8.5 mm cable) without compromising the resolu-
tion, alias-reduction, or S/N ratio.
Advanced Filing System
The BVP-900P/950P can store various filing data in each camera head unit, including reference files, scene
files and OHB data files. The same data can be also stored in a PC card within the MSU-700A via network
with CNU-700/500. The video engineer can remotely set up each camera head within a multi camera
operation from a central MSU panel. Furthermore, the Optical Head Block can store its OHB data internally
so there is no need for readjustment, even if an OHB is changed.
Longer transmission will be especially useful for outside
broadcasting applications.
Fibre Optic
Transmission System
The BVP-950P portable camera is capable of transmitting over
even greater distances with the use of fibre optic cables.
These cables keep the video signal in the digital domain, while
extending the transmission distance to 3000 metres.
