(1) “You’re going to the United Stated to live? How wonderful! You’re really lucky!” Does this sound familiar? But does it seem true all the time? Specialists in counseling and intercultural studies say that it is not easy to adjust to life in a new culture. They call the feelings which people experience when they come to a new environment culture shock. According to these specialists, there are three stages of culture shock. In the first stage, the newcomers like their environment. Then , when the newness wears off, they begin to hate the city, the country, the people, the apartment, and everything else in the new culture. In the final stage of culture shock, the newcomers begin to adjust to their surroundings and, as a result, enjoy their life more. Some of the factors in culture shock are obvious. Perhaps the customs are different. Perhaps the public service systems such as the telephone, post office, or transportation are difficult to figure out and you make mistakes. The simplest things seem difficult. The language may be difficult. The food may seem strange to you and you may miss the familiar smells of the food you are accustomed to in your own country. If you don’t look similar to the natives, you may feel strange. You may feel that everyone is watching you. In fact, you are always watching yourself. You are self-conscious. Who experiences culture shock? Everyone does in some form or another. But culture shock comes as a surprise to most people. A lot of the time, the people with the worst culture shock are the people who never had any difficulties in their own countries. They had hobbies or pastimes which they enjoyed. When they come to a new country, they do not have the same established positions or hobbies. They find themselves without a role, almost without an identity. They have to build a new self-image. 1. This is the research findings of a team of Japanese doctors, who say that most of our brains are not getting enough exercise, and as a result, we are growing old unnecessarily soon. Professor Taiju Matsuzawa wanted to find out why quite healthy farmers in northern Japan appeared to be losing their ability to think and reason at a rather early age, and how the speed of getting old could be slowed down. With a team of researchers at Tokyo National University, he set about measuring brain sizes of a thousand people of different ages with different jobs. Computer technology helped the researchers to get the most exact measurements of the sizes of the front and side parts of the brain, which have something to do with thinking and feeling, and decide the human character. As we all know, the back part of the brain, which controls tasks like eating and breathing, does not contract with age. Contraction of front and side parts, as cells die off, was seen in some people in their thirties, but it was still not found in some sixty and seventy-year-olds. Matsuzawa concluded from his tests that there is a simple way to prevent the contraction by using the head. The findings show that contraction of the brain begins sooner in people in the country than in the towns. Those with the least possibility, says Matsuzawa, are lawyers, followed by university professors and doctors. White collar workers doing the same work day after day in government offices are, however, as possible to have contracting brains as the farm workers, bus drivers and shop assistants. 6. Some people subscribe to as many as two or three different newspapers. But why do people read newspapers? Five hundred years ago, news of important happenings—battles lost and won, kings or rulers overthrown or killed—took months and even years to travel from one country to another. The news passed by word of mouth and was never accurate. Today we can read in our newspapers of important events that occur in faraway countries on the same day they happen. Besides supplying news from all over the world, newspapers give us a lot of other useful information. There are weather reports, radio, television and film guides, book reviews, stories, and, of course, advertisements. There are all sorts of advertisements. The bigger ones are put in by large companies to bring attention to their products. They pay the newspapers thousands of dollars for the advertising space, but it is worth the money for news of their products goes into almost every home in the country.
