All the gods, in-cluding Apollo, the god of medicine, had trieduselessly to offer an ef-fective treatment. Then the father of godsand men asked Hephaestus to open his head. This the god of the fire did. To the wonder ofall the Olympians, a goddess, well-grown andfull-armed, came out of Zeusr head. The god-dess was giving off light and splendor. Shewas Athena, goddess of wisdom and knowl-edge and patroness of Athens. The story of Athena becoming patron god-dess of Athens concerns the struggle be-tween the goddess and Poseidon. When thecity of Athens was first built by a Phoenician, both Poseidon and Athena competed for thehonour of naming it. It was then agreed thatwhoever offered the most useful object for men would become the patron of thecity. Poseidon struck the ground withhis trident and produced a horse, whereas Athena had an olive tree topresent, a symbol of peace andplenty. As the horse was regardedas struggle and sorrow, Athens wasnamed after the goddess, who soontook the city under her protection. Athena was the goddess of artsand crafts and woman's handi work. She was so skilled with her handsthat she tolerated no challenge to herskill in this respect. A Lydian maid,Arachne by name, did not seem tothink much of Athena's skill, for shefrequently talked big that she couldbeat the goddess if she had thechance to do so. The goddess wasquite angry. Dressed up as an old woman, shewent to advise Arachne to bemodest. But the ignorant crafts woman bravelyasked the goddess herself to comedown and compete with her. At thisthe goddess took off her disguise andaccepted the competition. The twowomen immediately set about makingdifferent designs. While the goddess worked on thestory of her rivalry with Poseidon,Arachne began to make a delicateweb. When both pieces were finished,Arachne saw, to her surprise, thatshe had been beaten, for the god-dess' design was infinitely better. Shefelt so shamed that she tied a pieceof silk to hang herself, But Just be-fore she breathed her last breath thegoddess changed her into a spiderand let her weave forever. |||
