*For those taking the paper-based GRE revised General Test, calculators will be provided at the test center for use during the test.
Choosing Between the Current Test and the Revised Test
To help you decide which of the two tests to take, start by selecting which schools you're most interested in, then find out when they need your scores. If you need scores before November 2011, start planning now. You will need to take the current test. You will want to register early to ensure you get a seat for your preferred date and location. is especially important.
If you don't need scores until after November 2011, taking the GRE revised General Test is a smart
move. With these new changes in place, the revised test will give you a better test experience —
and offer an even better way to show schools that you're ready for graduate-level work.

What Is Changing About the Test-taking Experience
A New Test-taker Friendly Design Delivers A More Flexible Test-taking Experience
For many students, taking the test that can help pave the way to graduate and business school is a big step. With that in mind, ETS has designed the GRE? revised General Test to be friendlier, more flexible and more focused on the skills you need for graduate and business school.
Now, you'll find new types of questions. More real-life scenarios that mirror the kind of thinking you'll do with graduate-level work. And a friendlier, more flexible test design that gives you the freedom to use more of your own test-taking style and strategies. There’s even an on-screen calculator for help
with the Quantitative Reasoning section.*
Here are the changes that give you a better test experience*:
, New preview and review capabilities within a section
, New "mark and review" feature to tag questions, so you can skip and return later
, New ability to change/edit answers within a section
, New on-screen calculator for the Quantitative Reasoning section
, New questions that better reflect the skills you'll need for graduate and business
school
, New answer formats, including tasks such as numeric entry and highlighting a
sentence in a passage to answer a question
, Less reliance on vocabulary out of context, more emphasis on reading — and no
antonyms or analogies
To practice for the computer-based revised General Test, download the POWERPREP? II
Software. It includes a Test Preview Tool and a Practice Test and is designed to help you get familiar with the new test design and various question types.
To practice for the paper-based test, view The Practice Book for the Paper-based GRE revised
General Test (PDF), which also contains a practice test.
The technology behind the friendlier, more flexible design
The computer-based GRE revised General Test features advanced technology that allows you to freely move forward and backward throughout an entire section to change or edit responses, even skip questions you can come back to later.
This new flexibility gives you a better, friendlier test experience — and the advantage of using more
of your own personal test-taking strategies and style.
What Is Changing About Test Structure and Length

What Is Changing About the Test Questions
New Questions That Better Reflect the Kind of Thinking You'll Do In Graduate or Business School
The GRE? General Test measures the skills you need to succeed in graduate or business school, regardless of your field of study. The GRE? revised General Test more closely aligns with the types of skills that are required to meet today's demanding graduate and business school expectations.
Here's a look at what is changing on the three test sections — Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative
Reasoning and Analytical Writing.
Verbal Reasoning: No More Antonyms and Analogies. More Focus on Reading.
The GRE revised General Test places a greater emphasis on higher-level cognitive skills.
Featuring new types of questions, the Verbal Reasoning section of the revised test more closely reflects the kind of thinking you'll do in graduate or business school, and better measures your ability to understand what you read and how you apply your reasoning skills.
Here's what is new for the Verbal Reasoning section:
, Antonyms and analogies have been removed from the test, so there are no
questions that test vocabulary out of context.
, New Text Completion questions test your ability to interpret, evaluate and reason
from what you've read. Text Completion questions test this ability by omitting crucial
words from short passages, requiring you to fill them in by selecting words or
phrases.
, New Sentence Equivalence questions test your ability to reach a conclusion about
how a sentence should be completed while focusing on the meaning of the whole
sentence.
, There are more Reading Comprehension questions on the test, including new
types of questions, such as selecting multiple correct answer choices instead of just
one, or highlighting a sentence within a reading passage to answer the question.
Get a quick view of the Verbal Reasoning Question Types.
Take a closer look at the Verbal Reasoning section.
Since there are substantial changes to the Verbal Reasoning section of the GRE revised General Test, the score scale for this section is changing, too. Learn more about score scale changes.
The revised Verbal Reasoning section measures your ability to:
, analyze and draw conclusions from discourse; reason from incomplete data; identify
author's assumptions and/or perspective; understand multiple levels of meaning,
such as literal, figurative and author's intent
, select important points; distinguish major from minor or relevant points; summarize
text; understand the structure of a text
, understand the meanings of words, sentences and entire texts; understand
relationships among words and among concepts
Learn about changes to the paper-based test.
Quantitative Reasoning: Same Basic Math Concepts. More Real-life Scenarios.
You'll still need to know basic math for the GRE revised General Test. The difference, however, is the increased emphasis on data interpretation and real-life scenarios. There are new types of
questions that require you to show your quantitative reasoning ability. Plus, to reduce the emphasis on computation, we provide an on-screen calculator.*
Here's what is new for the Quantitative Reasoning section:
, The revised test still requires basic math skills like arithmetic, algebra, geometry and
data analysis; however, it will focus more on questions involving data interpretation
and real-life scenarios.
, New Multiple-choice questions which include some that have more than one
correct answer, requiring you to select all of the correct answers from the choices
provided.
, New Numeric Entry questions require you to enter your answer in a box instead of
selecting an answer from a list.
, An on-screen calculator for use in this section reduces the emphasis on
computation.* Learn more about using the calculator.
Get a quick view of the Quantitative Reasoning Question Types.
Take a closer look at the Quantitative Reasoning section.
Since there are substantial changes to the Quantitative Reasoning section of the GRE revised General Test, the score scale for this section is changing, too. Learn more about score scale
changes.
The revised Quantitative Reasoning section measures your ability to:
, understand quantitative information
, interpret and analyze quantitative information
, solve problems using mathematical models
, apply basic mathematical skills and elementary mathematical concepts of arithmetic,
algebra, geometry, probability and statistics
Learn about changes to the paper-based test.
Analytical Writing: More Focused Responses. Less
Generalization.
The Analytical Writing section is not changing dramatically. However, you'll need to provide more
focused responses based on the tasks presented, so you can more accurately demonstrate your skill in directly responding to that task.
You will still write two essays, one where you evaluate a logical argument, and the other where you express your views on a critical issue.
Here's what is new for the Analytical Writing section:
, For each essay task, you will be given one topic rather than a choice of topics.
, Tasks are now more specific, and responses will be measured to ensure you can
integrate critical thinking and analytical writing by fully addressing the tasks you’re
presented.
Get a quick view of the Analytical Writing Question Types.
Take a closer look at the Analytical Writing section.
The revised Analytical Writing section continues to measure your ability to:
, articulate complex ideas clearly and effectively
, support ideas with relevant reasons and examples
, examine claims and accompanying evidence
, sustain a well-focused, coherent discussion
, control the elements of standard written English
The changes to these three sections incorporate the kind of tasks and thinking you'll do in graduate or business school — and provide more reliable results to the schools considering you for admission.
Important news for test takers: Make sure you get all the details you need to know about the GRE revised General Test, coming on August 1, 2011. Sign up now for test-taker news and
