英语(专科起点本科)A卷试卷 一. 阅读理解 (共4,共40分) 1. Dorothea Shaw is 71 years old and nearly blind, and she chose to live alone far away from people. She lives in Belize --- a country the size of Wales with a population only that of Swansea. Her home is at Gales Point, a tiny village which can be reached only by sea or air; after a 10-mile walk into the hills one finally reaches a piece of land and two small houses so hidden in the thick over-grown forest that only a handful of people know Dorothea is there. She lives happily and totally alone --- growing her vegetables, looking after her trees and dogs, cats and chickens. Once a month or so an old friend passes by with her food supplies and letter --- usually including a letter from her sister in Scunthorpe and some bits of clothing from friends in Canada. Sometimes a local man will come and cut wood for her and a group of British soldiers will come across her and be greeted with the offer of a cup of coffee. At night she lies in her tiny sleeping room with the dogs on the floor, the cats on the table near the typewriter and one of the hens settled down in a corner of the bookshelf, and listens for hours to any Spanish, English, German or French broadcasts she can find on her radio. Sometimes she gets lonely but most of the time the animals and the radio are company enough. But recently the very things which she had tried to get free from so well have begun to catch up with her. The peace of the forest has been destroyed by the noise of earth --- moving machines not many miles away. What she once only heard of distantly on the radio is now on her doorstep. Things began to change three years ago. The new main north-south road in Belize was cut through the forest only four or five miles away. “Now more and more people know I’m here,” she says, “I feel more and more uneasy each day.” (10分) (答题时限:00:01:00) (1) Dorothea doesn’t get lonely since she has ____ with her. When we can see well, we do not think about our eyes often. It is only when we cannot see perfectly that we come to see how important our eyes are. People who are nearsighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes. Many people who do a lot of close work, such as writing and reading, become nearsighted. Then they have to wear glasses in order to see distant things clearly. People who are farsighted face just the opposite problem. They can see things that are far away, but they have difficulty reading a book unless they hold it at arm’s length. If they want to do much reading, they must get glasses too. Other people do not see clearly because their eyes are not exactly the right shape. This, too, can be corrected by glasses. Some people’s eyes become cloudy because of cataracts. Long ago these people often became blind. Now, however, it is possible to operate on the cataracts and remove them. When night falls, colors become fainter to the eyes and finally disappear. After your eyes have grown used to the dark, you can see better if you use the side of your eyes rather than the centers. Sometimes, after dark, you see a small thing to one side of you, which seems to disappear if you turn your head in its direction. This is because when you turn your head, you are looking at the thing too directly. Men on guard duty sometimes think they see something moving to one side of them. When they turn to look straight at it, they cannot see it any more, and they believe they were mistaken. However, this mistake happens because the center of the eye, which is very sensitive in daylight, is not as sensitive as the sides of the eye after dark. When you are dissatisfied, you should voice your dissatisfaction. One reason for doing so is to help the vendor (卖 方) know there is a problem. The problem may have been created at a lower level in the vendor’s company, and the vendor himself may know nothing about it at all. You render him a service when you bring weaknesses or failures to his attention. A second reason for writing a letter of complaint to a vendor is to seek redress (赔 偿). You may not wish to pursue the matter so far as to take legal action, but you may wish to give the vendor the opportunity of making good. Most vendors value your business and their reputation sufficiently to replace defective goods, resupply work that did not meet specifications, or refund money when necessary. No vendor likes to do so, but your carefully worded letter of complaint may motivate him to do so. When you write a letter of complaint, you’d better keep these TIPS in mind: First, be courteous though firm. You will not win a vendor’s cooperation by anger. Secondly, be reasonable. Show logically and factually that the responsibility lies with the vendor or his claims. The vendor should be impressed with your fairness and quiet grasp of the facts in the matter. Thirdly, be specific about what is wrong. Be equally specific about what you want done about it. Lastly, tell how you have been hurt or inconvenienced by the problem. This strengthens your argument for redress. (10分) (答题时限:00:01:00) (1) Which one is NOT true according to the passage? (2分) (答题时限:00:00:30) A.You are seldom satisfied with the products you bought. Some of these tribes have never had any communication outside of their small geographical areas. When they do contact the outside world, their lives usually change. Learning how to change without losing the best of their own cultures is a problem for them. One native tribe in New Guinea has a difficult situation. The people of the tribe are being pulled in two ways. First of all, copper has been discovered under the land where they have lived for centuries. Developers want to mine it. The problem is that the copper is directly under the most important buildings of their society. These buildings are a necessary part of their religion. How can the copper be mined without changing the group’s religion? The answer to this question has not yet been found. However, a group of people are trying to help the tribe to learn to communicate with the rest of the world. Cultural Survival Inc. is the name of the group. The people are anthropologists, scientists who study cultures. They want to help small, separate societies live successfully within the larger society. Cultural Survival Inc. wants to help these groups keep the idea of who they are. It wants to teach them how to live in the modern world. This organization works with another kind of problem, too. Sometimes a central government does not consider the needs of local people. Often the rich people of a country will get more from a new project than the working people. The poorer people sometimes suffer even more because of these projects. One thoughtless government leader moved the people out of a very large area. He wanted to set up a special vegetable business. He wanted something to sell to earn money from other countries. About 50,000 people were forced off their natural land. These people suffered a great loss because they had to leave their homes.
