The tour of Longmen Grottoes will take us about 2 hours, later at noon will have meal in Downtown Luoyang City. Luoyang is famous for being capitals of 13 dynasties. The city is located on the northern bank of the Luohe River, and faces the sun, so it got the name—Luoyang. Luoyang is an highly developed tourist city, there are Longmen Grottoes, White Horse Temple and the Guanlin Monastery. Luoyang Peony Fair Festival also attracts many tourists from all over the world every year in April and May. Since Tang Dynasty, Luoyang Peony has been considered as the best peony on earth. And peony is also the symbol of the city. And now I have a question for you. Do you know there are three Treasure Houses of Stone Sculptures in China? Have you seen any of them? According to the schedule, this morning we will visit one of them and one of the World Cultural Heritage. It is located 13 km south of Luoyang, on the bank the Yi River. Longmen in English means “Dragon Gate”. Although in Western Culture dragon was considered as monster who can perish human by blowing fire from his mouth, in China Dragon is regarded as a sacred creature, in the old time, emperor of the country used to call himself Real Dragon. And we Chinese always say that we are descendants of Dragons. So when Emperor Suiyang of Sui dynasty built his capital here in Luoyang, there is the Gate of the city, so he named the hill where the Grottoes were located, Longmen. Longmen grottoes is a Buddhism Grottoes, it’s also called “Temple Grottoes.” The grottoes were started around the year 493 when Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534) moved the capital to Luoyang and were continuously built for 400 years until the Northern Song Dynasty The Longmen Grottoes prolong for 1,000 meters from north to south where there are over 2,300 holes and niches, 2,800 steles, 40 pagodas, 1,300 caves and 100,000 statues. They were mostly created by artists of Northern Wei and the Sui-Tang periods. Okay that’s all for the brief introduction, when we arrive at Longmen Grottoes, we will find out more of this famous place of interests. 讲解词 Now that we finally arrived at Longmen Grottoes, let's go and find out more about this place of interest. Once we got in, the first grotto we saw is the Qianxi Temple, located at the northern edge of Western Hill, was built in the early Tang Dynasty around 640AD. In the middle it's Buddha Amitabha and his pupils one each side, two bodhisattvas, the goddess of mercy and the great-force gainer and two heavenly king accompany them on both sides. They seems full and round, it may not be quite appealing to people nowadays, but in dynasty Tang fullness and roundness were considered as symbol of beauty. Now in front of us are the Binyang Caves. Northern Wei Dynasty constructed a series of lager scale caves, which are the northern, southern, and middle Binyang Caves. The middle cave, is the only one that finished during period of the Northern Wei. There are 11 big statues in the cave. Sakyamuni is of dignified and serene appearance, while his disciple and Bodhisattva are of slender figure and elegant look, which are the typical style of the late Northern Wei Dynasty. The floor is engraved with lotus patterns, so is the rooftop. The South Binyang Cave was completed in the late Sui dynasty, and the North Cave in the early Tang, each with a style of their own days. At the middle segment of West Hill, hollowed in the half way of the cliff, there is a cave with over 15,000 Buddhist images measuring 4 cm high, so it is named the Ten-thousand Buddha cave. The main Buddha Amitabha sits on the lotus throne, having a composed and solemn face. The wall behind Amida is carved with 54 lotuses upon which there are 54 Bodhisattvas in different shapes and with various expressions. Lotus Cave was built on the base of the natural caves during North Wei dynasty. Differing from sitting statues, Sakyamuni is of standing figure, showing that he has trudged a long distance to develop Buddhism from India to China. A huge relief of a well sculpted lotus flower is engraved on the dome, seedpod in the centre, petals in the outer and each leaf with honeysuckle patterns. Around the lotus are six flying musicians with vivid gestures, as if they are dancing along with the melodies of the music. Right now we move on to the Fengxian temple, this is the symbol of Longmen Grottoes. It is the largest Buddhist niche at Longmen, 33.5 m by 38.7 m with nine massive statues. It was built in the Tang Dynasty. The most impressive figure is the statue of Vairocana Buddha sitting cross-legged on the eight-square lotus throne. It is 17.14 meters (about 56.23 feet) in total height with the head four meters (about 13 feet) in height and the ears 1.9 meters (about 6.2 feet) in length. The Buddha has a well-filled figure, a sacred and kindly expression and an elegant smile. It is said the appearance of the Buddha was produced according to Empress Wu Zetian, who donated 20,000 strings of cash on the project of building this temple. At the sides of Vairocana there are two statues of Vairocana Buddha's disciples, Kasyapa and Ananda, wearing prudent and devout expressions. The figures of Bodhisattvas and devas can also be found in the temple. Some have dignified and genial expressions, while others are majestic and fiery. The various appearances and delicate designs are the representations of Empire Tang's powerful material and spiritual strength as well as the high crystallization of people's wisdoms. After the Fengxian Temple is the prescription Cave known as Yao Fang dong in Chinese, it is located at the foot of the hill. There are 140 prescriptions engraved at the door way, so it got the name. And these prescriptions also made the cave famous all over the world. Now in front of us is the Guyang Cave, this is the first cave that was made during the Northern Wei Dynasty. Thus it has a history of over 1,500 years. It is famous for the calligraphy engraved on the walls. What must be pointed out is that the famous scriptions called" The Twenty Choice of Calligraphy at Longmen", it recorded he introductions of statue making. So much for the tour, thanks for your cooperation! See you on bus half an hour later.
