常识与聪明的关系(英语)
What is the relationship between knowledge and wisdom? Which is more important?
Knowledge refers to the information, understanding and skills that you gain through education or experience. It is the foundation of deep insight, the increase of which can make you understand more things. However, wisdom refers to the ability to make sensible decisions and give good advice based on the experience and knowledge that you have already got. That is, wisdom is more about the knowledge. It is the use of knowledge and more about your judgment and ability. For example, you can make two different decisions in the same situation depending on circumstances surrounding it and this will be based on your wisdom which comes from extensive observation and broad knowledge.
As for the importance of the two, it is hard to say which is more important. Actually they complement each other. But if I have to compare and pick out a more important one, wisdom would be my answer. As people always say, wisdom in the mind is better than money in the hand. Also, wisdom is to the mind what health is to the body. It is more important for the following reasons.
First, you can spend money to study, to seek knowledge; but you cannot spend money to buy wisdom. Knowledge is an external thing, while wisdom is an innate thing, knowledge can be obtained from others, but wisdom can only come from your own existence.
Second, knowledge is dead, but wisdom is flexible. The value of knowledge can be achieved only by flexible and wise use. People who have knowledge without wisdom, often become erudite bookworm, and tend to fail to achieve much because they often have a holier-than-you manner and are unable to step forward.
To sum up, wisdom, inherent in our mind and the master of knowledge, is more significant to man. That’s why our grandpas who
actually received not much education are still our beloved and respectful wise friends.
