He had left a message the night before, telling me that my show was to be cancelled. I called him several times, but each time his secretary told me that he was in a meeting and that he would call me later. So I waited and waited, but there was still no call. Three hours passing by, I became more and more impatient. I was certain that my agent didn’t care about my work, and he didn’t care about me. I was overcome with that thought. I started to shout at the phone, “Let me wait, will you? Who do you think you are?” At that time I didn’t realize my wife was looking on. Without showing her surprise, she rushed in, seized the phone, tore off the wires, and shouted at the phone, “Yeah! Who do you think you are? Bad telephone! Bad telephone!” And she swept it into the wastebasket. I stood watching her, speechless. What on earth...? She stepped to the doorway and shouted at the rest of the house, “Now hear this! All objects in this room-- if you do anything to upset my husband , out you go!” Then she turned to me, kissed me, and said calmly, “Honey, you just have to learn how to take control.” With that, she left the room. After watching a crazy woman rushing in and out, shouting at everything in sight, I noticed that something in my mood(情绪)had changed. I was laughing. How could I have trouble with that phone? Her antics helped me realize I had been driven crazy by small things. Twenty minutes later my agent did call. I was able to listen to him and talk to him calmly. 21. Why did the author shout at the telephone? A. He was mad at the telephone. B. He was angry with his agent. C. He was anxious about his wife. D. He was impatient with the secretary. 22. What made the author laugh? A. His own behavior. B. His wife’s suggestion. C. His changeable feelings. D. His wife’s sweet kiss. 23. What does the underlined word “antics” refer to? A. Smart words. B. Unusual actions. C. Surprising looks. D. Anxious feelings. B Something in chocolate could be used to stop coughs and lead to more effective medicines, say UK researchers. Their study found that theobromine, found in cocoa, was nearly a third more effective in stopping coughs than codeine, which was considered the best cough medicine at present. The Imperial College London researchers who published their results online said the discovery could lead to more effective cough treatment. “While coughing is not necessarily harmful, it can have a major effect on the quality of life, and this discovery could be a huge step forward in treating this problem,” said Professor Peter Barnes. Ten healthy volunteers were given theobromine, codeine or placebo, a pill that contains no medicine, during the experiment. Neither the volunteers nor the researchers knew who received which pill. The researchers then measured levels of capsaicin, which is used in research to cause coughing and as a sign of how well the medicine are stopping coughs. The team found that, when the volunteers were given theobromine, the capsaicin need to produce a cough was around a third higher than in the placebo group. When they were given codeine they need only slightly higher levels of capsaicin to cause a cough compared with the placebo. The researchers said that theobromine worked by keeping down a nerve activity (神经活动), which causes coughing. They also found that unlike some standard cough treatments, theobromine caused no side effects such as sleepiness. 24. According to Professor Barnes, theobromine ______. A. cannot be as effective as codeine B. can be harmful to people’s health C. cannot be separated from chocolate D. can be a more effective cure for coughs 25. We learn from the text that volunteers in the experiment _______. A. were patients with bad coughs B. were divided into three groups C. received standard treatments D. suffered little side effects 26. Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A. Codeine: A New Medicine B. Chocolate May Cure Coughs C. Cough Treatment: A Hard Case D. Theobromine Can Cause Coughs C Life can be so wonderful, full of adventure and joy. It can also be full of challenges, setbacks and heartbreaks. Whatever our circumstances(境况), we generally still have dreams, hopes and desires—that little something more we want for ourselves and our loved ones. Yet knowing we can have more can also create a problem, because when we go to change the way we do things, up come the old patterns and pitfalls(陷阱) that stopped us from seeking what we wanted in the first place. This tension(矛盾) between what we feel we can have and what we're seemingly able to have is the niggling(烦人的) suffering, the anxiety we feel. This is where we usually think it's easier to just give up. But we're never meant to let go of the part of us that knows we can have more. The intelligence behind that knowing is us—the real us. It's the part that believes in life and its possibilities. If you drop that, you begin to feel a little "dead" inside because you're dropping "you". So, if we have this capability but somehow life seems to keep us stuck, how do we break these patterns? Decide on a new course and make one decision at a time. This is good advice for a new adventure or just getting through today's challenges. While, deep down, we know we can do it, our mind—or the minds of those close to us—usually says we can't. That isn't a reason to stop, it's just the mind, that little man or woman on your shoulder, trying to talk you out of something again. It has done it many times before. It's all about starting simple and doing it now. Decide and act before overthinking. When you do this you may feel a little, or large, release from the jail of your mind and you'll be on your way. 27. It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that we should _________. A. slow down and live a simple life B. be careful when we choose to change C. stick to our dreams under any circumstances D. be satisfied with what we already have 28. What is the key to breaking the old patterns? A. To focus on every detail. B. To decide and take immediate action. C. To listen to those close to us. D. To think twice before we act. 29. Which of the following best explains the underlined part in the last paragraph? A. Escape from your punishment. B. Realization of your dreams. C. Freedom from your tension. D. Reduction(减少) of your expectations. 30. What does the author intend to tell us? A. It's easier than we think to get what we want. B. It's important to learn to accept sufferings in life. C. It's impractical to change our way of thinking. D. It's harder than we expect to follow a new course. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Public Speaking Training ·Get a coach 31 ,so get help. One night there was a fire in the house and the grandmother died while trying to rescue the child. The fire spread quickly, and the situation was terrible. Neighbors called the fire department, then stood helplessly by, unable to enter the house because flames blocked all the entrances. The little girl appeared at an upstairs window, crying for help, just as word spread among the crowd that the firefighters would be delayed a few minutes because they were all at another fire. Suddenly, a man appeared with a ladder, put it up against the side of the house and disappeared inside. When he reappeared, he had the little girl in his arms. He delivered the child to the waiting arms below, then disappeared into the night. An investigation revealed that the child had no living relatives, and weeks later a meeting was held in the town hall to determine who would take the child into their home and bring her up. A teacher said she would like to raise the child. She pointed out that she could ensure her a good education. A farmer offered her an upbringing(教养) on his farm. He pointed out that living on a farm was healthy and satisfying. Others spoke, giving their reasons why it was to the child’s advantage to live with them. Finally, the town’s richest resident rose and said, “I can give this child all the advantages that you have mentioned here, plus money and everything that money can buy.” Throughout all this, the child remained silent, her eyes on the floor. “Does anyone else want to speak?” asked the meeting chairman. A man came forward from the back of the hall. He walked slowly and appeared to be in pain. 注意: 1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右; 2. 应使用5个以上短文中标有下划线的关键词语; 3. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好; 4. 续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。 Paragraph 1: When he got to the front of the room, he stood directly in front of the little girl and held out his arms. _______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: When asked about her choice, the girl gave people the reasons firmly. __________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 参考答案 听力(30分) 1-20 CABCA CBBCC ABBAC BAACA 阅读理解(35分) A篇:21-23 BAB B篇:24-26 DBB C篇:27-30 CBCA 任务型:31-35 EBCGA 完型:(30分) 36-55 BCADD BAACB ACCDD ABCDB 单项填空(5分) 56-65DABBB ACBCC 单词拼写(10分) 66. sensitive 67. attached 68. extra 69. containing 70. bitten 71. relief 72. trick 73. exploring 74. independent 75. personally 语法填空(15分): 76. terribly   77. fixed   78. choice   79. lay 80. when  81. listeners 82. it 83. disappeared 84. to 85. and 读后续写(25分) When he got to the front of the room, he stood directly in front of the little girl and held out his arms. His hands and arms were terribly scarred. The little girl cried out,” This is the man who rescued me!” With a leap, she threw her arms around the man’s neck. She buried her face in his shoulder and sobbed for a few moments. Then she looked up and smiled, stating happily she would live with him. When asked about her choice, the girl gave people the reasons firmly. She said in a low but determined voice, “I really desire to get a good education that will give me chances to live my dreams. Besides, I know that money means a lot to me since I have no relatives to rely on. But it’s the man who saved my life when I was desperately facing a fire like that.
