Readers should be seated in the assembly. A Deacon, Priest or Minister should read the Examination of Conscience, lead the Litany of Repentance, and introduce the “Our Father” as outlined in the Rite of Penance. , A musician and cantor(s) should lead the assembly in song. Instrumental music may be played during individual confession. (A list of music suggestions are included herein.) , A Bible or Lectionary should be readied with the appropriate readings. , Lighting may be subdued. Candle(s) should be lit at the ambo. The appropriate number of candles should be lit on the Advent Wreath. , Stations for confessors should be prepared. Priests might stand or sit in isolated areas around the main body of the church to receive penitents. In this way, the communal nature of the rite is maintained. Candles may light these stations. , For the sake of simplicity, the presider alone or the presider, deacon (when leading a part of the rite) and preacher could participate in the procession. Other priests could be seated in the sanctuary or in a reserved area before the liturgy begins. , Sections within the rite specifically reserved for the priest presider are marked “presider”. Sections where a priest (not presiding), deacon, or other minister may lead are marked as “minister”. 4 INTRODUCTORY RITES OPENING HYMN GREETING Presider: Grace, mercy, and peace be with you from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior. All: And with your spirit. INTRODUCTION Minister: In these or similar words... My brothers and sisters, Advent is a time of preparation, when we make ready to celebrate the mystery of our Lord?s coming as man, the beginning of our redemption. Advent also moves us to look forward with renewed hope to the second coming of Christ, when God?s plan of salvation will be brought to fulfillment. We are reminded too of our Lord?s coming to each one of us at the hour of our death. We must make sure that he will find us prepared for his coming, as the gospel tells us” “Blessed are those servants who are found awake when the Lord comes” (Lk 12:37). Advent is a time to recall the cry of the early Christians: Maranatha! “Come, Lord Jesus!” This service of penance is meant to make us ready in mind and heart for the coming of Christ, which we are soon to celebrate in the Mass of Christmas. 5 OPENING PRAYER Presider: My brothers and sisters, we look forward to celebrating the mystery of Christ?s coming on the feast of Christmas. Let us pray that when he comes he may find us awake and ready to receive him. Silent prayer Almighty and merciful God, you have brought us together in the name of your Son to receive your mercy and grace in our time of need. Open our eyes to see the evil we have done. Touch our hearts and convert us to yourself. Where sin has divided and scattered, may your love make one again; where sin has brought weakness, may your power heal and strengthen; where sin has brought death, may your Spirit raise to new life. Give us a new heart to love you, so that our lives may reflect the image of your Son. All: Amen. Unworthy servants that we are, O Lord, grieved by the guilt of our deeds, we pray that you may gladden us by the saving advent of your Only Begotten Son. Collect Thursday of the Third Week of Advent 6 CELEBRATION OF THE WORD OF GOD The following are suggested readings. Alternative readings may be selected. The preacher may wish to use one, two, or three readings. If only one is chosen, it is preferable that it be the gospel. The readings are printed elsewhere in this booklet, for ease of rehearsal. A Lectionary or Bible should be used during the liturgy. FIRST READING Isaiah 59:1-4, 9-15 It is your crimes that separate you from your God. HOMILY 7 EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE The assembly is now invited to make an examination of conscience. This can be done in silence or by using the examination below. The presider and minister or two readers might alternate. Allow a brief period of silence between each question or phrase. , What is my attitude to the sacrament of penance? Do I sincerely want to be set free from sin, to turn to God and to begin a new life? , Did I forget to mention, or deliberately conceal, any grave sins in past confessions? Have I fulfilled the precept on annual confession and Communion? , Did I perform the penance I was given? Did I make reparation for any injury to others? Have I tried to put into practice my resolution to lead a better life in keeping with the Gospel? , Is my heart set on God so that I really love him above all things and keep his commandments? Or am I more concerned about things of this world? , Am I courageous in professing my faith in God? Am I willing to be known as a Christian in private and public life? , Do I pray daily? Do I really raise my mind and heart to God? Do I offer God my difficulties, my joys, and my sorrows? Do I turn to God in time of temptation? , Do I show reverence for God?s name? Have I offended him by swearing, blasphemy, or taking God?s name in vain? , Do I keep Sundays and feast days holy by taking part in Mass, fully and attentively? , Are there any false gods in my life? Do I give greater attention to money, prestige, or fame than I give to God and his laws? , Have I contributed to the well being and happiness of my family by patience and genuine love? Have I been obedient to my parents; have I showed them proper respect? Have I been careful to offer my children a Christian upbringing and teach them by good example? Have I been faithful and loving to my spouse? , Do I share my possessions with those less fortunate? Do I show respect for people of all races and education levels? Do I value all human life? 8 RITE OF RECONCILIATION GENERAL CONFESSION OF SINS Minister: Brothers and sisters, let us call to mind the goodness of God our Father, and acknowledge our sins, so that we may receive his merciful forgiveness. All: I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, And, striking their breast, they say: through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; Then they continue: therefore I ask blessed Mary, ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. PENITENTIAL INTERCESSIONS/ LITANY OF REPENTANCE Presider: Let us turn to Christ with confidence and ask his mercy. Minister: Your mercy is our hope; welcome us to the sacrament of reconciliation. All: Amen. INDIVIDUAL CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION The presider or other minister might tell the assembly where the confessors will be located. Some brief words regarding the manner of confession should be given. If the assembly if free to leave following individual confession, the Alternative Concluding Rite may be appropriate. The people may be encouraged to accept one of the penances which are found in the worship aid or the confessors may give a penance suited to the individual. The assembly may be advised to remain in church if there is to be a common ending. Quiet instrumental music might be played during this time. PRAYER OF ABSOLUTION After hearing the confession and offering suitable counsel, the priest extends his hands over the penitent’s head and gives him absolution. Confessor: God the Father of mercies, through the death and resurrection of His Son has reconciled the world to himself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins; through the ministry of the Church, may God grant you pardon and peace, and I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son, , and of the Holy Spirit. Rather, it is your crimes that separate you from your God, It is your sins that make him hide his face so that he will not hear you. For your hands are stained with blood, your fingers with guilt; Your lips speak falsehood, and your tongue utters deceit. No one brings suit justly, no one pleads truthfully; They trust in emptiness and tell lies; they conceive mischief and bring forth malice. That is why right is far from us and justice does not reach us. We look for light, and lo, darkness; for brightness, but we walk in gloom! Like blind men we grope along the wall, like people without eyes we feel our way. We stumble at midday as at dusk, in Stygian darkness, like the dead. We all growl like bears, like doves we moan without ceasing. We look for right, but it is not there; for salvation, and it is far from us. For our offenses before you are many, our sins bear witness against us. Let love be sincere; hate what is evil, hold on to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; anticipate one another in showing honor. Read Matthew 25: 31-46. , As a family, prepare a basket of food or toiletries and give it to a family in need. , Skip a meal at your favorite restaurant. Use the money to purchase a Christmas gift for a person served by a parish organization or local charity. , Identify a person whom you have offended since your last confession and pray for them each day for a week. , Think of someone you have been especially uncharitable towards and send a Christmas card with a note of kindness attached to it. , Work at a soup kitchen or food pantry during Advent for a couple of hours. , Reflect on the Beatitudes.....find someone who meets one of those needs, such as one who mourns, and send them a note or visit them during Advent. , Speak a word of affirmation to each member of your household this week. Make an effort to "help carry someone's burden" among your friends or family members. , Offer to share something you have - or something you're doing - with someone who would appreciate it. , Take a "prayer time" of ten minutes or so... and ask God if there is something God would like to say to you... and LISTEN. , Call or write a note to someone who may be lonely or in need of "comfort and joy." , Gather your family members for a reading of the "Christmas Story" from the Gospel of Matthew or Luke. Discuss what it means to them and to you. , Include a "weekday" Mass in your plans during Advent. , Every morning until Christmas, say a Hail Mary for peace. , Reach out to a lonely person at school. It begins with creation and relates the birth of the Lord to the major events and personages of sacred and secular history. The particular events contained in the announcement help pastorally to situate the birth of Jesus in the context of salvation history. This text, The Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, may be chanted or recited, most appropriately on December 24, during the celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours. It may also be chanted or recited before the beginning of Christmas Mass during the Night. It may not replace any part of the Mass. (see Roman Missal, Appendix I) Prior to the opening procession, the Mass during the Night may begin with the Roman Martyrology, proclaimed by a deacon, a lector, or some other minister. (see ORDO instructions for 25 December 2013, Christmas) 27 THE NATIVITY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST from the Roman Martyrology The Twenty-fifth Day of December, when ages beyond number had run their course from the creation of the world, when God in the beginning created heaven and earth, and formed man in his own likeness; when century upon century had passed since the Almighty set his bow in the clouds after the Great Flood, as a sign of covenant and peace; in the twenty-first century since Abraham, our father in faith, came out of Ur of the Chaldees; in the thirteenth century since the People of Israel were led by Moses in the Exodus from Egypt; around the thousandth year since David was anointed King; in the sixty-fifth week of the prophecy of Daniel; in the one hundred and ninety-fourth Olympiad; in the year seven hundred and fifty-two since the foundation of the City of Rome; in the forty-second year of the reign of Caesar Octavian Augustus, the whole world being at peace, JESUS CHRIST, eternal God and Son of the eternal Father, desiring to consecrate the world by his most loving presence, was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and when nine months had passed since his conception, was born of the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem of Judah, and was made man: The Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to the flesh. 28 The Announcement of Easter and the Moveable Feasts to be sung on the Solemnity of the Epiphany 5 January 2014 Know, dear brethern, (brothers and sisters) that, as we have rejoiced at the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, so by leave of God’s mercy we announce to you also the joy of his Resurrection, who is our Savior. On the fifth day of March will fall Ash Wednesday, and the beginning of the fast of the most sacred Lenten season. On the nineteeth day of April you will celebrate with joy Easter Day, the Paschal feast of our Lord Jesus Christ. On the first day of June will be the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ. On the eighth day of June the feast of Pentecost. On the twenty-second day of June, the feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. On the thirtyith day of November, the First Sunday of the Advent of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom is honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
