第三部分: 阅读理解 (共16小题;每小题2分,满分32分)
A
It was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas 2005. While
most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to
ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike
outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he
returned to find his bike gone.
The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to
work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also
used to get groceries(食品杂货),saving us from having to walk long distances from
where we live.
I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and
told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One
wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up. Once
again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a
complete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before.
People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of
kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has had a spreading effect
in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity(人性)as a whole. And it has influenced(影响)us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with others.
No matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And
the results can be everlasting.
66. Why was the bike so important to the couple?
A. The man’s job was bike racing. B. It was their only possession.
C. It was a nice Kona 18 speed D. They used it for work and daily
life.
67. We can infer from the text that ____________.
A. the couple worked 60 hours a week. B. people were busy before Christmas
C. the stranger brought over the bike D. life was hard for the young family
68. How did people get to know the couple’s problem?
A. From radio broadcasts. B. From a newspaper.
C. From TV news. D. From a stranger.
69. What do the couple learn from their experience?
A. Strangers are usually of little help. B. One should take care of their bike.
C. News reports make people famous. D. An act of kindness can mean a lot.
B
Many animals recognize their food because they see it. So do humans. When you
see an apple or a piece of chocolate you know that these are things you can eat. You
can also use other senses when you choose your food. You may like it because it
smells good or because it tastes good. You may dislike some types of food because
they do not look, smell or taste very nice. Different animals use different senses to
find and choose their food. A few animals depend on only one of their senses, while
most animals use more than one sense.
Although there are many different types of food, some animals spend their lives
eating only one type. The giant panda(大熊猫)eats only one particular type of
bamboo(竹子). Other animals eat only one type of food even when given the choice.
A kind of white butterfly(蝴蝶)will stay on the leaves of a cabbage, even though
there are plenty of other vegetables in the garden. However, most animals have a
more varied diet(多样化饮食). The bear eats fruits and fish. The fox eats small
animals, birds and fruits. The diet of these animals will be different depending on the
season.
Humans have a very varied diet. We often eat food because we like it and not
because it is good for us. In countries such as France and Britain, people eat foods
with too much sugar. This makes them overweight, which is bad for their health.
Eating too much red meat and animal products, such as butter, can also be bad for the
health. Choosing the right food, therefore, has become an area of study in modern life.
70. We can infer from the text that humans and animals _________.
A. depend on one sense in choosing food B. are not satisfied with their food
C. choose food in similar ways D. eat entirely different food
71. Which of the following eats only one type of food?
A. The white butterfly. B. The small bird.
C. The bear. D. The fox.
72. Certain animals change their choice of food when ___________.
A. the season changes B. the food color changes
C. they move to different places D. they are attracted by different
smells
73. We can learn from the last paragraph that __________.
A. food is chosen for a good reason B. French and British food is good
C. some people have few choices of food D. some people care little about
healthy diet
C
The African elephant, the largest land animal remaining on earth ,is of great importance to African ecosystem(生态系统).Unlike other animals, the African
elephant is to a great extent the builder of its environment. As a big plant-eater, it
largely shapes the forest-and-savanna(大草原)surroundings in which it lives,
therefore setting the terms of existence for millions of other animals that live in its
habitat(栖息地).
It is the elephant's great desire for food that makes it a disturber of the environment and an important builder of its habitat. In its continuous search for the
300 pounds of plants it must have every day, it kills small trees and under-bushes, and
pulls branches off big trees. This results in numerous open spaces in both deep
tropical forests and in the woodlands that cover part of the African savannas. In these
open spaces are numerous plants in various stages of growth that attract a variety of
other plant-eaters.
Take the rain forests for example. In their natural state, the spreading branches overhead shut out sunlight and prevent the growth of plants on the forest floor. By
pulling down trees and eating plants, elephants make open spaces, allowing new
plants to grow on the forest floor. In such situations, the forests become suitable for
large hoofed plant-eaters to move around and for small plant-eaters to get their food
as well.
What worries scientists now is that the African elephant has become an endangered species. If the elephant disappears, scientists say, many other animals will
also disappear from vast areas of forest and savanna, greatly changing and worsening
the whole ecosystem.
74.What is the passage mainly about?
A. Disappearance of African elephants.
B. Forests and savannas as habitats for African elephants.
C. The effect of African elephants' search for food.
D. The eating habit of African elephants.
75. What does the underlined phrase “setting the terms” most probably mean?
A. Fixing the time. B. Worsening the state.
C. Improving the quality. D. Deciding the conditions.
76. What do we know about the open spaces in the passage?
A. They result from the destruction of rain forests.
B. They provide food mainly for African elephants.
C. They are home to many endangered animals.
D. They are attractive to plant-eating animals of different kinds.
77. The passage is developed mainly by ____________.
A. showing the effect and then explaining the causes
B. pointing out similarities and differences
C. describing the changes in space order
D. giving examples
D
Throughout the history of the arts, the nature of creativity has remained constant
to artists. No matter what objects they select, artists are to bring forth new forces and
forms that cause change -- to find poetry where no one has ever seen or experienced
it before.
Landscape(风景) is another unchanging element of art. It can be found from
ancient times through the 17th-century Dutch painters to the 19th-century romanticists
and impressionists. In the 1970s Alfred Leslie, one of the new American realists,
continued this practice. Leslie sought out the same place where Thomas Cole, a
romanticist, had produced paintings of the same scene a century and a half before.
Unlike Cole who insists on a feeling of loneliness and the idea of finding peace in
nature, Leslie paints what he actually sees. In his paintings, there is no particular
change in emotion, and he includes ordinary things like the highway in the
background. He also takes advantage of the latest developments of color
photography(摄影术) to help both the eye and the memory when he improves his
painting back in his workroom.
Besides, all art begs the age-old question: What is real? Each generation of artists
has shown their understanding of reality in one form or another. The impressionists
saw reality in brief emotional effects, the realists in everyday subjects and in forest
scenes, and the Cro-Magnon cave people in their naturalistic drawings of the animals
in the ancient forests. To sum up, understanding reality is a necessary struggle
for artists of all periods.
Over thousands of years the function of the arts has remained relatively constant.
Past or present, Eastern or Western, the arts are a basic part of our immediate
experience. Many and different are the faces of art, and together they express the
basic need and hope of human beings.
78. The underlined word “poetry” most probably means___________.
A. an object for artistic creation B. a collection of poems
C. an unusual quality D. a natural scene
79. Leslie’s paintings are extraordinary because__________ .
A. they are close in style to works in ancient times
B. they look like works by 19th-century painters
C. they draw attention to common things in life
D. they depend heavily on color photography
80. What is the author’s opinion of artistic reality?
A. It will not be found in future works of art.
B. It does not have a long-lasting standard.
C. It is expressed in a fixed artistic form.
D. It is lacking in modern works of art.
81. Which of the following is the main topic of the passage?
A. History of the arts. B. Basic questions of the arts.
C. New developments in the arts. D. Use of modern technology in the arts.

W: My God! What happened to the front of the car?
M: I had an accident. I crashed into a tree, but it still runs all right.
W: But the front part is seriously damaged.
Text2:
W: Good morning. May I help you?
M: I’d like to change some money first, and then open a saving account.
W: Ok, just a moment please.
Text3:
W: Look at this high school graduation picture. That’s me in the top row.
M: Wow, that’s amazing! Looks like you’ve lost some weight since then.
W: Actually, my weight’s about the same. But I’ve grown a couple of inches, so I look
thinner now.
Text4:
W: Excuse me, sir, but have you seen a young gentleman looking for his wristwatch?
M: A young man, madam?
W: Yes, about 20 years old.
Text5:
W: I’m sorry I was late for work, Mr. Smith, but I overslept, because my alarm clock
didn’t work this morning.
M: Well, it’s OK this time, Mary. But it’s disturbing the rest of your colleagues, you
know.
W: Yes, I know. I won’t let this happen again. I am so sorry.
Text6:
W: I went shopping without my umbrella yesterday morning.
M: Yesterday morning was beautiful. I thought the sunny spell was going to continue.
W: So did I. That’s why I didn’t take my umbrella. I got caught in the rain in the
afternoon. It was raining cats and dogs.
M: I know. I couldn’t believe it when we got hit by that storm. It was pouring rain all
afternoon.
W: We really have some miserable weather here sometimes. I wish I lived somewhere
that was sunny all year round.
M: If it was sunny all year round, there would be a drought. You probably wouldn’t
like that either.
W: I guess you’re right. Maybe I just wish that the weather was a little more
predictable.
Text7:
M: I’d love to have my own farm.
W: It would be very hard work. Are you sure?
M: I wouldn’t mind getting up early every morning and the physical work would
make me fit and healthy.
W: Running a farm would be totally different from your current job.
M: That’s one reason I’d like to try it. I’d really like to get away from working 9:00 to
5:00 in an office.
W: You’d need a lot of training before becoming a farmer. It’s not something you can
walk into.
M: My uncle owns a farm and I’ve spent some time working with him. I love being in
the countryside with farm animals and green fields.
W: Well, I’d certainly come and visit you. It would be great to take a working holiday
on a farm. I’d love to escape the city life for a while.
Text8:
W: Do you do a lot of your shopping online?
M: Not really. I like looking on the Internet at what’s available, but I usually prefer to
actually see and touch what I’m buying before I pay for it. Sometimes, I’ll look at
something in a shop, but later buy it online if it is cheaper. You don’t like buying
things online, do you?
W: No. I am a little worried about safety. You never know who’s trying to find out
your codes and passwords. Aren’t you worried about that?
M: Not really. I know that it happens, but if you buy from reliable companies with
safe websites, you should be OK. Even though I use online shopping facilities, I
don’t think it’s the best way to shop.
W: I thought you loved anything technological.

M: Susan, I was shocked to hear about husband’s illness. I’m so sorry. W: Thanks. I appreciate your sympathy. I hope he’ll be all right, but this is his second
heart attack in five years. He is not very strong physically.
M: I understand how worried you must feel, but I’m sure things will come out all
right. Is there anything I can do for you? I will glad to look after the kids while
you go to the hospital.
W: Thanks a lot. I might take you up on it tomorrow if you don’t mind. M: Not at all. And please tell your husband we’re all thinking about him and wishing
him a fast recovery.
W: I will. See you tomorrow.
