THEFREEDOMGIVERSJosiahHenson(June15,1789–May5,1883)wasanauthor,abolitionist,andminister.Bornintoslavery,inPortTobacco,CharlesCounty,Maryland,heescapedtoUpperCanada(nowOntario)in1830,andfoundedasettlementandlaborer'sschoolforotherfugitiveslavesatDawn,nearDresden,inKentCounty,UpperCanada,ofBritishCanadaThe'JosiahHenson'cabin,inRockville,MontgomeryCounty,MarylandDresden,Ontario,Canada.JosiahHensonInterpretiveCentre,nearDresden,Ontario,Canada.UncleTom'sCabinHistoricSiteincludesthecabinthatwashometoJosiahHensonduringmuchofhistimeinthearea,from1841untilhisdeathin1883.Thefive-acrecomplexincludesHenson'scabin,aninterpretivecentreaboutHensonandtheDawnsettlement,anexhibitgalleryabouttheUndergroundRailroad,outbuildings,a19th-centuryhistorichouse,acemeteryandagiftshop.Provincialplaque,placedbytheGovernmentofOntario,memorializingHenson's"DawnSettlement",nearDresden,OntarioHarrietBeecherStoweJune14,1811 –July1,1896Stoweclaimedtohaveavisionofadyingslaveduringacommunionserviceatthecollegechapel,whichinspiredhertowritehisstory.However,whatmorelikelyallowedhertoempathizewithslaveswasthelossofhereighteen-month-oldson,SamuelCharlesStowe.Sheevenstatedthefollowing,"Havingexperiencedlosingsomeonesoclosetome,Icansympathizewithallthepoor,powerlessslavesattheunjustauctions.YouwillalwaysbeinmyheartSamuelCharlesStowe.ShortlyafterinJune,1851,whenshewas40,thefirstinstallmentofherUncleTom'sCabinwaspublishedinserialforminthenewspaperTheNationalEraBarbaraCarter:Herdevotiontoherancestorisaboutmorethanpersonalpride:itisaboutfamilyhonor.AmericanfictionAracialselloutunwillingtostandupforhimselfVSAmanofprincipleAfrican-AmericanMosesMoseswiththeTenCommandmentsMosesisaprophetintheAbrahamicreligions.AccordingtotheHebrewBible,hewasadoptedbyanEgyptianprincess,andlaterinlifebecametheleaderoftheIsraelitesandlawgiver,towhomtheauthorshipoftheTorah,oracquisitionoftheTorahfromHeavenistraditionallyattributed.MosesisthemostimportantprophetinJudaism.HeisalsoanimportantprophetinChristianity,Islam.Thisstopwasonlypartofamuchlargermission…MapofvariousUndergroundRailroadescaperoutesintheNorthernUnitedStatesandCanadaAsecretwebofescaperoutesandsafehousesthattheyusedtoliberateslavesfrotheAmericanSouth.ItisamuseumindowntownCincinnati,OhiobasedonthehistoryoftheUndergroundRailroad.Openedin2004,theCenteralsopaystributetoalleffortsto"abolishhumanenslavementandsecurefreedomforallpeople.JohnParker(abolitionist)(1827–January30,1900)Parker,whowasAfricanAmerican,helpedhundredsofslavestofreedomintheUndergroundRailroadresistancemovementbasedinRipley,Ohio.Herescuedfugitiveslavesfornearlyfifteenyears.Hewasoneofthefewblackstopatenthisinventionsbefore1900.HishouseinRipleyhasbeendesignatedaNationalHistoricLandmarkandrestored.TherestoredJohnP.ParkerhouseinRipley,Ohio.TheRiverManonParker:blackconductorTroubleDon'tLast(2003),ShellyPearsallbasedhercharacterof"TheRiverMan"onParkeranAmericanabolitionist,inventor,ironmoulderandindustrialist.TheJohnP.ParkerHistoricalSocietywasformedin1996topreserveandinterpretknowledgeofJohnParkerandhisfamily;ithasworkedtorestorethehouseandoperateitasamuseumwithexhibitsandeducationalprogramsWhiteconductor:drivenbyreligiousconvictionsQuakerabolitionistLeviCoffinandhiswifeCatherinehelpedmorethan2,000slavesescapetofreedom.Hewasgiventheunofficialtitleof"PresidentoftheUndergroundRailroad.Anestimatedthreethousandfugitiveslavesarebelievedtohavereportedtohavepassedthroughhiscare.TheCoffinhomeinFountainCity,Indiana,isoftencalledthe"GrandCentralStation"oftheUndergroundRailroad.NationalUndergroundRailroadNetworkFollowinguponlegislationpassedin1990,in1997,CongresspassedH.R.1635,whichPresidentBillClintonsignedintolaw,andwhichauthorizedtheUnitedStatesNationalParkServicetoestablishtheNationalUndergroundRailroadNetworktoFreedomprogramtoidentifyassociatedsites,aswellaspreservethemandpopularizetheUndergroundRailroadandstoriesofpeopleinvolvedinit.TheNationalParkServicehasdesignatedmanysiteswithinthenetwork,postedstoriesaboutpeopleandplaces,sponsorsanessaycontest,andholdsanationalconferenceabouttheUndergroundRailroadinMayorJuneeachyear
