nullTHE ESSAY OR WHOLE COMPOSITIONTHE ESSAY OR WHOLE COMPOSITIONPrewriting StagePrewriting StageWhat is the prewriting stage? What is the prewriting stage? This is when you prepare your ideas before you start writing. You will find writing easier if you build an outline first. Good writers find it useful to observe Six Prewriting Steps.Six Prewriting StepsSix Prewriting Steps1. What you are going to write about? Ask yourself: What question am I answering in this paragraph? What is the most important point? How can I make a topic sentence from the most important point? What facts/examples best support my topic sentence? Do I need more facts on this topic?null2. Write out answers to the questions. You should write just enough to help you remember the “Why” and “How” you are going to write your paragraph or essay. 3. Collect and organise facts related to your paragraph/topic. List down facts that answer your question. ***Make sure your facts are related to the exact question you are going to answer in your paragraph/essay.null4. Ask yourself: Why should people be interested in this topic? Why is this topic important? What do I want to say about this topic? 5. Choose the main idea you are going to present. Stick to it throughout your paragraph/essay. 6. Organize facts/data to develop the main idea. Look at the facts & ideas on the topic, which will best support your main idea?. Once you have chosen the facts and ideas to use, decide which order to put them in the essay. List it down to guide yourself as you write. The Writing StageThe Writing StageThis is when you turn your ideas into an essay using these steps: This is when you turn your ideas into an essay using these steps: 1. Ask a friend to read if your essay is easy to understand and interesting.Writing ClearlyWriting ClearlyHow can you write clearly? How can you write clearly?Focus; be precise & concise. NOT writing long sentences keeps us focused on facts & not side-track. Think of your readers’ interest; how you write will either Encourage readers to keep reading, or Discourage them to give up! Don’t be stuffy. Write in full English sentences, choosing words you’re confident of its meaning and comfortable using. Do not show off or use flourishes and big words.nullUse everyday language; not that of lawyers. Eg. Use let to permit, buy to purchase etc). Wordiness will cause readers to feel “lost”, as your meaning becomes unclear, or your writing basically has no depth and/or main point. Avoid Long paragraphs or long sentences; it confuses readers. A paragraph is essentially a unit of thought; it must flow smoothly with the main idea.nullClear thinking is the key to clear writing; ask yourself with every sentence: What am I trying to say? What words will best express it? What image or idiom will make it clearer? Is this image fresh enough to have an effect? Can I have it in a shorter sentence and/or more directly? nullBe Understandable; clear writing comes from clear thinking. So think what you want to say, then say it as simply as possible. Never use a long word when a short one will do; if it is possible to cut out a word, always cut it out. Never use a foreign phrase, scientific word or a Jargon; use an everyday English word.
