[原创]湖北经济学院专升本英语08 2007年“专升本”试卷 课程名称: 大学英语 考试时间:2007年 月 日 姓 名: 准考证号: Part I Reading Comprehension(每小2分,共40分) Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice. Question 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: When a magazine for high-school students asked its readers what life would be like in twenty years, they said: Machines would be run by solar power. Buildings would rotate so they could follow the sun to take maximum advantage of its light and heat. Walls would “radiate light”and “change color with the push of a button.”Food would be replaced by pills. School would be taught “by electrical impulse while we sleep.”Cars would have radar. Does this sound like the year 2000? Actually, the article was written in 1958 and the question was “What will life be like in 1978,” The future is much too important to simply guess about, the way the high school students did, so experts are regularly asked to predict accurately. By carefully studying the present, skilled businessmen, scientists, and politicians are supposedly able to figure out in advance what will happen. But can they? One expert on cities wrote: Cities of the future would not be crowded, but would have space for farms and fields. People would travel to work in “airbuses”, large all-weather helicopters carrying up to 200 passengers. When a person left the airbus station he could drive a coin-operated car equipped with radar. The radar equipment of cars would make traffic accidents “almost unheard of”. Does that sound familiar? If the expert had been accurate it would, because he was writing in 1957. His subject was “The city of 1982”. If the professionals sometimes sound like high-school students, its probably because future study is still a new field. But economic forecasting, or predicting what the economy will do, has been around for a long time. It should be accurate, and generally it is. But there have been some big mistakes in this field, too. In early 1929, most forecasters saw an excellent future for the stock market. In October of that year, the stock market had its worst losses ever, ruining thousands of investors who had put their faith in financial foreseers. One forecaster knew that predictions about the future would always be subject to significant error. In 1957, H. J. Rand of the Rand Corporation was asked about the year 2000, “Only one thing is certain,” he answered. “Children born today will have reached the age of 43.” 1. High-school students’ answers to “What would life be in 1978? ”sound _________. A) accurate B) imaginative C) correct D) OK 2. According to the writer, forecasting is fairly accurate in________. A) politics B) science C) sociology D) economy 3. Which of the following statements does not confirm with the writers comment on future study? A) Predictions should be accurate. B) Professionals sometimes sound like high-school students. C) There have been some big mistakes in the field of economic forecasting. D) Predictions about future would always be subject to significant errors. 4. The present passage was most probably written _______. A) just before 2000 B) in 1958 C) after 1982 D) in 1957 5. H. J. Rand's prediction about the year 2000 shows that________. A) it is easy to figure out in advance what will happen B) it is difficult to figure out in advance what will happen C) only professionals can figure out in advance what will happen D) very few professionals can figure out in advance what will happen Passage Two Question 6 to 10 are based on the following passage: Humans have long been studying the flight of birds and trying to imitate it. Not until the twentieth century did engineers fully understand the principles of flight that birds have been using for millions of years. Birds are adapted in their body structure, as no other creatures, to life in the air. Their wings, tails, hollow bones, and internal air sacs(气囊) all contribute to this great faculty. These adaptations make it possible for birds to seek out environments most favorable to their needs at different times of the year. This results in the marvelous phenomenon we know as migration---the regular, seasonal movement of entire populations of birds from one geographic location to another. Each year with great regularity most species of birds return to their summer homes, court(求偶) and choose mates, build their nests, lay eggs, and rear their young. In the late summer and fall they acquire their new plumage(羽毛). Then they join with others of their kind in large and small flocks, feeding and storing up fat in their bodies. Thus they prepare for the hardships of winter ,whether they remain in the cold northlands or make the strenuous journey to the south. 6. The best title for this passage would be ______. A. Principles of Flight B. How birds fly C. The Annual Migration of Birds D. The Body Structure of Birds 7. The main idea of this passage is that _______. A. birds are built the same as other creatures B. birds are built to fly C. birds need to migrate to survive D. birds need to be told when to migrate 8. It can be inferred from the second paragraph that _______. A. birds’ migration is generally without purpose B. birds’ migration is merely out of their habits C. most birds travel regularly for a change in their life D. birds are able to look for situations favorable to their existence 9. Birds feed and store fat in their bodies ______. A. for use in rearing their young B. for use in winter C. to be used when they return next summer D. to be used on their way south 10. Which of the following is implied by the passage? A. The migration of birds is a “social” undertaking. B. Each individual bird has its own pattern of migration. C. All birds fly south for the winter. D. Different kinds of birds join together in their migration. Passage Three Questions 11 to 20 are based on the following passage: If you are like most people, your intelligence varies from season to season. You are probably a lot sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of year. A noted scientist, Ellsworth Huntington(1876-1947), concluded from other men’s work and his own among peoples in different climates that climate and temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities. He found that cool weather is much more favorable for creative thinking than is summer heat. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in summer than they are during the rest of the year. It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to be lowest in summer. Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring man’s mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature. Fall is the nest-best season, then winter. As for summer, it seems to be a good time to take a long vacation from thinking. 11. According to the passage, man’s intelligence_____________________. A) stays the same throughout the year B) varies from day to day C) changes with seasons D) changes from year to year 12. Ellsworth Huntington decided that climate and temperature have_________________. A) some effect on most people's intelligence B) a great effect on everyone's intelligence C) some effect on a few people's intelligence D) no effect on most people's intelligence 13. Ellsworth Huntington’s conclusion was based on__________________. A) variations of his own mental abilities from season to season B) the results of research done by him and other scientists among peoples in different climates C) detailed records of temperature changes in different places D) detailed records of different ways of thinking among peoples in different climates 14. Why does the author say summer is a good time to take a long vacation from thinking?___________________ A) Because a long vacation in summer helps to improve people’s mental power. B) Because summer is a good time for outdoor activities. C) Because mental exertion in the summer heat taxes too much of people’s energy. D) Because people tend to be less creative during summer. 15. The central idea of this passage is_________________________. A) man’s mental abilities change from season to season B) man’s intelligence varies from place to place C) man should take a long vacation in summer D) if you want to do creative thinking, go to a cool place Passage Four Question 16 to 20 are based on the following passage: Most students have little interview experience. The interview should hold little terror. If you are still nervous, help is at hand, your Careers Service will arrange practice interviews and firms often advertise for mock interviewees and will pay you for the privilege. So you are about to have your first interview with the company of your dreams-how do you make a good impression? First, take care about your personal appearance. Interviewers will realize that you cannot afford expensive, quality clothes but they will not be impressed if your clothes are untidy and your hair is dirty. No one is too poor to afford soap. Second, don't forget the importance of body language. Make sure your entrance is deliberate(从容的) and shake the interviewer s hand firmly, but don't crush it. Maintain eye contact smile and try to relax. Initially, you will probably be asked open-ended questions relating to your application form, interests, courses and so on. This is your cue to begin talking, so don't answer in monosyllables and clam up. Make sure you answer the questions and don't be afraid of stopping to think before speaking. At the end of the interview you will probably be asked if you have any questions. It is advisable to have a list of them prepared, as intelligent queries(疑 问) convey interest. Second round interviews can last anything between a few hours and two days spent at a hotel. Here your communication, leadership and social skills will be assessed. You might have to give a presentation chair a meeting and discuss various topics. In addition, companies often ask you to sit tests, some of which examine your mathematical and problem-solving skills, while others test your personal and communication skills. These interviews are intended to give you the opportunity to shine. Try to relax and enjoy it, you will not be at your best if you let your nerves take over. Just remember, if you are not accepted, then you probably would not have enjoyed the work anyway. Just try to make the most of the interviews. 16. What kind of role may the students never play in the process of interview? A) Mock interviewee. B) Graduate trainee. C) Question asker. D)Chairman of a meeting. 17. By saying “No one is too poor to afford soap”, the author probably suggest________. A) that interviewees are rich enough to buy soap B) that it's better to bring with them a beauty soap when being interviewed C) that interviewees should take a bath D) that buying soap is essential in job-bunting interviews 18. Usually, the function of interviewer's open-ended questions relating to the application form is A) to acquire some personal details B) to dispel some doubts C) to kill the time D) to encourage the interviewee to talk 19. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? A) The purpose of the first interview is to gain a good first impression B) The whole interview process usually consists of two rounds. C) The second round interviews last longer than the first one. D) If your application is refused, it is certain that you are incapable for the post. 20. There are students from colleges and universities, from the middle schools, from the primary schools, and people from all walks of life. What difference does it make between studying abroad and studying home? Though many students are crazy about going abroad to pursue their higher education, I think studying home is preferable. For one thing, you don’t have to take foreign language tests such as TOEFL and GRE. This can save you a tremendous amount of time, money and effort, allowing much of your energy to be devoted to your academic foals. In addition, if you study home, you can stay with your family and old friends. Meanwhile, while studying home, you can enjoy the kind of intimate friendship and comfortable family atmosphere which you can only dream of in a foreign university, where you will be accompanied by your own shadow most of the time. For these reasons, pursuing one’s higher education at home is a more realistic and sensible choice. In a word, I prefer to study home.
